Literacy across the curriculum requires children and young people


to have skills which enable them to interpret and compose texts across
different disciplines. It is most commonly defined as the ability to read and

write. The writing traditions of the English language make reading
comprehension an essential part of literacy, but this might not be as
important in cultures or groups that rarely read printed material. The ability
to identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate and compute, using
printed and written materials associated with varying contexts.

Traditional Literacy

 Is the integration of listening, speaking, reading, writing and critical


thinking. It includes a cultural knowledge which enables a speaker,
writer or reader to recognize and use language appropriate to different
social situations. Literacy is from the adjective “literate”; and the
suffix “-acy”; which is used in nouns referring to a quality, state or
condition in student- centered.

“New literacies”

 That arise from new technologies include things like text-messaging,


blogging, social networking, podcasting, and video making. These
digital technologies alter and extend our communication abilities,
often blending text, sound, and imagery.
