DETAILED LESSON PLAN

DLP No. : 5 Learning Area: SCIENCE Grade Level:8 Quarter:2 Duration:60

Learning Competency/ies: Differentiate the epicenter of an earthquake from its focus; intensity of Code:
an earthquake from its magnitude; active and inactive faults. S8ES-IIa-15
Key ● FAULT – is a fracture or break in the Earth’s crust where earthquakes are most
Concepts/Understandings likely to occur repeatedly.
to be Developed: ● It is a break in the Earth’s crust, and along the break, significant movement has
taken place. /A line of fracture along the split rock.
● An earthquake is a vibration of the Earth due to rapid release of energy.
● Focus is the point underground where the actual breaking of the rock occurs.
● Epicenter is the point on the earth’s crust where an earthquake originates.
It is the point directly above the focus on the surface of earth.
● Seismograph is used to record the shock waves sent out by
earthquakes.
● Energy from inside the Earth exerts a force on the rocks along faults.
● Magnitude – is the term used to measure the energy released by an
earthquake.
● Intensity - is the measure of the human reaction to the ground movement
and the damage to the ground surface such as cracks and landslides.
1. Objectives
Knowledge Differentiate the intensity of an earthquake from its magnitude.
Skills Identify the effects and impacts of earthquakes.
Attitudes Exhibit disaster preparedness through making a disaster symbols
Values Initiate an Environmental Activity in school through Environmental Symposium.
2. Content/Topic Magnitude and Intensity
3.Learning A. References:
Resources/Materials/ LM,Unit II, Module 1 pp.127-131
Equipment TG,Unit I, Module 1 pp. 81- 85
CG, Unit I, Module 1 p. 46
B. Materials
● Flat screen television/LCD Projector
● Laptop
● Electrical wires
4. Procedures
4.1 Introductory Activity
● Attendance check/Checking of Assignment
Assuming that you are inside the classroom and the earthquake suddenly
occurs. What are you going to do? What did you feel when an earth occur?
● How is the power of an earthquake measured?
● What is the difference between intensity and magnitude?
● Present this picture and let them try to look closely what is the defect in the
picture.

● What does PHIVOLCS mean?
4.2 Activity
● Have them watch a video clip, then tell the students to take down notes the
important terms based on the video.

(optional)

DETAILED LESSON PLAN

4.3 Analysis Processing of Student’s Comprehension about the video:

1. What is the video all about?
2. What do you call the measure of energy released during an earthquake?
3. How long does an average earthquake last? (10 sec.).
4. What is the origin of an earthquake?
5. What do you call the instrument is used to measure the energy released by an
earthquake? How are earthquakes recorded?
`
4.4 Abstraction ● An earthquake may be described in two ways: intensity and magnitude.
The magnitude of an earthquake gives us an idea of how strong or weak
the shaking is.
● The intensity of an earthquake is determined by observing the effects of
the earthquake in different places. Houses, buildings, and other structures
are inspected. People are interviewed about what they saw (the cabinet
fell over), how they felt (I was frightened), or what they did (I ran out of the
house).
● Show the Table about the PHIVOLCS Earthquake Intensity Scale (PEIS)
Refer to Science 8 LM page 127 – 130 .
● Identify the effects and impacts of an Earthquake.
1. When an earthquake occurs, where would shaking be greater? Near the
epicenter or away from the epicenter?
2. Where would damage be more? Near the epicenter or away from the
epicenter?
3. Based on your answers to Questions A and B, where would the intensity be
higher? Near the epicenter or away from the epicenter?

4.5 Application ● Students in groups will make a disaster preparedness symbols. Each will
choose a representative to present their symbols.
5. Assessment

The symbols made by students will be their assessment. They will be graded according to
the following rubrics:
● neatness and creativity - 10 pts.,
● relevance - 5 pts,
● visual impact- 5 pts.
● Total = 20pts.
● Suppose an earthquake occurred in Cebu. Would the intensity be the
same all over the Cebu?

6. Assignment
What is the connection between earthquakes and tsunamis?
Bring the following materials:
● flat basin or laundry tub (batya)
● water
DETAILED LESSON PLAN

● rectangular piece of plastic panel or plywood

● rock
7. Wrap-up/Concluding Create a disaster plan, Earthquake preparedness can help reduce anxiety and minimize
Activity injury.
