Learning Competency/Code Differentiate the intensity of an earthquake from its magnitude.

Content The relationship between faults and earthquake.
Subject Matter Earthquake and Faults
1. Define intensity and magnitude of the earthquake;
Objectives 2. Familiarize the intensity and magnitude scale; and
3. Awareness of disaster or earthquake preparedness.

LESSON PROPER
Procedure Activities
 To check learners’ previous knowledge, the teacher will ask few
questions by answering true or false. Raise your hands to be
recognize.
 Say TRUE if the statement is correct and FALSE if it is not
correct.
1. Marikina Fault line is the most geologically active fault line
in the Philippines.
Elicit
2. When Central Philippine Fault will move, the Philippine Sea
will be affected.
3. Active faults are areas where rock displacement can occur.
4. Western Philippine Fault was renamed to West Valley
Fault.
5. Seismologists said that once the West Valley Fault Line
moved, it can lead to the eruption of Taal Volcano.
Engage  Present the topic for the day.
 Project/post and read the objectives of the lesson.
 A picture puzzle activity is introduced. The teacher prepared four
envelopes. Inside the envelopes are pictures they are going to form.
The class will be divided into four group and they will select a
representative to present the photo in front and describe what
happen.
 They are given three minutes to do the activity and two minutes for
the presentation. (Pictures are shown below.)

A Detailed Lesson Plan: Science 8

 The teacher will show a video about earthquake from ABS – CBN
Explore
News and GMA News TV downloaded from the internet.
 With the same groupings, each group will be given 1 question to
answer.
 The following questions are:
1. What is the news all about?
Explain
2. Describe what happen in the news.
3. What terms in the headline will describe how strong is
the earthquake?
4. What is magnitude? What is intensity?
 The teacher will discuss briefly the definition of magnitude and
intensity.
 For enjoyable learning, the teacher will assign the class into three
groups. They will arrange the strips with description to its correct
intensity and magnitude scale.
Elaborate
 The first group will arrange Mercalli scale, second group is Richter
scale, and the las group will arrange PHIVOLCS scale.
 Ask one member of the group to present their output. Their answer
will be corrected once the teacher starts explaining the intensity and
magnitude scale.
 Matching Type:
1. Intensity A. Scale used in measuring the
magnitude of earthquake.
2. Richter Scale B. Seismograph
Evaluate 3. Magnitude C. Compiled the Mercalli Scale
D. Measure of the amount of
4. Seismograph energy released.
5. Guiseppe Mercalli E. Determined by observing the
effects of the earthquakes.

2
A Detailed Lesson Plan: Science 8

 Answer briefly.
a) Enumerate the dos and don’ts before, during and after
Extend earthquake.
 A picture of active faults in the country will be shown to the
students to inculcate the value of earthquake preparedness.
