The elements of art are like the ingredients in a recipe.

Sometimes artworks contain only one

or two elements. Sometimes they have all the elements of art. One thing is certain, however.
There would be absolutely no art without the seven elements of art.

Secondly, knowing what the elements of art are enables us to (1) describe what
an artist has done, (2) analyze what is going on in a particular piece and (3)
communicate our thoughts and findings using a common language. It is
important to understand the visual elements of art so that we can give an in-depth appreciation
of the great work exerted to create an artwork.

In painting color theory, a hue is a pure pigment—one without tint or shade

VALUE. It indicates the quantity of light reflected. When referring to pigments,
dark values with black added are called “shades” of the given hue name.
Light values with white pigment added are called “tints” of the hue name.
Intensity, on the other hand deals with the amount of purity in the hue itself. It can
also be referred to as “saturation”

How Artists use Colour

16 DECEMBER 2016 ~ ALEID

Colour is often one of the most exciting components of a painting. In both

figurative and abstract painting, colour can be used for its decorative beauty, to
create mood and to express or arouse an emotion. In nature and in art, colour has a
profound effect on the viewer

Colors can also affect the composition of a

painting
The five major composing roles of color are as follows:
1.To harmonize (or the opposite, to contrast)
2.To unify a scene
3.To set forth a visual path
4.To produce rhythm
5.To create emphasis
Shapes can play important roles in the creation of art. They help to create complex drawings
and paintings, affect composition, and contribute to the balance within a work.

Space, as one of the classic seven elements of art, refers to the distances or areas
around, between, and within components of a piece. Space can be positive or
negative, open or closed, shallow or deep, and two-dimensional or three-
dimensional.

The point of a composition is to pull the eye of the viewer across the painting,
taking in individual elements to finally focus on the main feature or focus of
thepainting – this could be anything from subject matter to emotional
effects.Compositions are created by the artist.

n art, a symbol is usually a solid, recognizable thing—an animal, a plant, an object,

etc.—that stands for something that would be hard to show in a picture or a
sculpture. A force of nature, for example, or an idea. A symbol can also stand for
someone's whole story.

The sunset symbolizes the completion of a day's work and shows the passage of
time. As the sun sets, it is time to end the day and take a break. The awesome
beauty of the setting sun is also symbolic of the beauty and mystery of life itself. As
the sun sets, light fades, which is symbolic of the forces of darkness
