CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
Most people nowadays use the common gas stove because of its ease of use, but there are
still some people (mostly from rural areas) who cook over open fires and on smokeless stoves
and use the traditional charcoal, wood and other such biomass, because it is much more
affordable. This traditional cooking method, however, can take a huge toll on human health and
Although its negative effects may not be immediately apparent, it can lead to respiratory
health problems and eye ailment. Harmful smoke particles such as carbon monoxide (CO),
benzene and volatile organic gases, amongst other toxic carcinogenic substances from open stove
cooking, can further result in eye, kidney, lung irritation and respiratory diseases (asthma) and is
From people who do not develop illnesses from coal pollutants will find their health and
wellbeing due to coal's contribution that can cause global warming. The discharge of CO2 into
the atmosphere associated with burning coal is a major contributor to global warming and its
adverse effects on health and wellbeing worldwide, such as different diseases and implications

Smokeless stoves, however—a type of cook stove or open stove—can decrease or lessen
the smoke it emits and the carbon footprints it produces. There are different types of smokeless
stoves with different ways of reducing smoke. However this study investigates the use of exhaust
fans and filters in smokeless stoves and its role in reducing the carbon footprints it produces.
Along with this, aims to determine the efficiency of exhaust and filters in smokeless stoves in
The Research entitled “The Effectivity of Using Exhaust Fan and Filter in Making
Smokeless Stove in Reducing Carbon Footprints” aims to determine the effectiveness of creating
a coal-powered smokeless stove by adding exhaust fan and filters. Specifically, this study seeks
1. In what ways can the addition of exhaust fans and filters affect the performance of a
biomass stove?
2. How can this stove avoid or lessen the risk of the respiratory health issues of its
users?
3. What are the factors that need to be considered to cause the exhaust fan and filter to
work efficiently
5. What may be the negative effects of incorporating exhaust fans and filters into coal
stoves?

DEFINITION OF TERMS
For better understanding and appreciation of this study the following terms were
Absorption. This term refers to the capability of all solid substances to attract to their surfaces
molecules of gases or solutions with which they are in contact. (Britannica et al, 2017)
ALRI. This term refers to the single leading cause of death among children less than 5 years old,
(17) and are among the top 4 killers of South African children under 5 years of age. (McGraw H.

This study will benefits the user of the Traditional Stove ( Stove that using Coal). This
study aims to reduce all the chemical properties that produces from the Traditional Stove (Stove
that using Coal) to make it possible the reaserchers make "Smokeless Stove" to have a better
living. And lastly this will benefits all the future reaserchers who will study this certain Reaserch.
This study focuses only on and covers the effectivity of exhaust fans and filters in
reducing the carbon emission and harmful smoke particles produced by smokeless stoves. It also
covers the benefits of a smokeless stove in reducing carbon footprints and how the exhaust and
filter work to accomplish this task. The scope of this study also includes the price and
affordability of such a stove. Hazards and disadvantages of its use are also included in this study
to determine the full effectivity of exhaust fans and filters in smokeless stoves.
The study, however, will be limited to the area or vicinity of Lucena City which will
serve as the locale. The researchers chose this location because this is the nearest and accessible
area. In this setting the researchers will be able to get reliable and precise data from the
respondents. The respondents of the study will be people from Lucena City who use the
traditional cook stove (a stove that uses wood/coal). This study, in addition, does not cover the
