GEOLOGIC PROCESSES

2 Processes

Exogenic process-The Process that occurs on the Earth’s Surface.

 Weathering-The process of breaking down of rocks in the Earth’s surface due to Natural Agents.
2 types of Weathering:
1. Physical Weathering-also called as “Mechanical Weathering”
-Disintegrates rocks, breaking them into smaller pieces.
 Processes that leads to Physical weathering
1.Frost Wedging
-When water collects, freezes and expands inside of the rock,it will continue to contracts and
expands till the rock splits apart.
2.Salt crystal growth
-When salt accumulates inside of the rock,it can cause the rock to fall apart
3.Abrasion
-wearing away of rocks by constant delusion to one another, scratch due to water, smooth
4.Biological activity
-Plants,humans and animals as agents of mechanical weathering
2. Chemical Weathering
-Decomposes rocks through Chemical Reaction changes the original rock-forming minerals
 Processes that leads to chemical weathering
1.Dissolution
-dissolving of rocks due to a liquid solution
2.Oxidation
-reaction of rocks to oxygen and water
3.Hydrolysis
-change in the composition of minerals when they react with water
FACTORS THAT AFFECTS THE EXTENT OF WEATHERING:
1.Climate
 Physical Weathering
-Mostly occur in areas that are cold and dry
 Chemical Weathering
-Occur in areas with high temperature or rainfall

2.Rock type
-Rocks that are made up of Mineral that are stable to surface conditions will be most
Resilient to weathering
3.Rock Structure

 Erosion
 Deposition
 Mass wasting
