MY LUnCH IS OUT OF THIS WORLD!

YEAR 5
Calling all Year 5 students! NASA has chosen you to design and create packages for food that can survive in outer space! In
groups of five, you need to create a package big enough for a golf ball and your design needs to be worthy enough to be
presented to an astronaut who will be visiting our class in Week 9.

You will need to generate 3 annotated designs for your package. Then, based on factors such as size (needs to fit a golf ball)
and materials chosen, you will need to choose one of these designs to create. You’ll need to record your design process
using the template provided, and choose only recyclable materials for your design.
Materials you may want to consider using include:
• tin foil or foil trays Be careful when using your
• plastic containers materials and when using
• cardboard boxes scissors, and work as a
• paper team!
• wrappers
• plastic wrap

Your group needs to “sell” your food package to our astronaut friend in Week 9. You need to explain the food that it will
conceal, justify why you’ve chosen the materials you have and why you’ve chosen your particular design. Remember, as
discussed, food packages need to keep food clean and protect whatever’s inside from unwanted physical or chemical
changes- remember temperatures in outer space can get extremely hot or cold…

You will evaluate your design based on the evaluation criteria we will create as a class, giving your design a score out of 10.
Your score might be something you want to advertise in your sale pitch.

Your group will have SEVEN class periods to design, create, evaluate, and come up with
a sales pitch before presentations in Week 9.

GOOD LUCK DESIGnERS!
