CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY OF RESEARCH

In this chapter, the writer would like to present methodology of research, place

and time, object of research, material, procedure, operational definition, techniques of

collecting data and techniques of analyzing the data.

3.1 Methodology of Research

Methods in this research are a descriptive analysis and research. According

to Joko in http://answers.yahoo.com, descriptive method of research is where the

person doing the reseach presents it in a descriptive manner. Researches do in

SMAN 17 Palembang with purpose to comparing the grafting of mango plant by

using two media.

3.2 Place and Time

The research was conducted in SMAN 17 Palembang. To make grafting was

start on 04 February 2012 until finish.

3.3 Object of Research

Object of research is observing to tree of mango plant, mango plant will to

grafting by using two media. The media use 1. Soil and water as the media

2.Coconut fiber and sand as the media.

3.3 Materials

3.3.1 Materials

c) Tree of mango plant

d) Coconut fiber
 e) Water

3.3.2 Tools

a) Cutter

b) Rope

c) Hormone growth for root

d) Plastic

3.4 Procedure

1. Choose the trees that match with the characteristic that we want.

2. Choose the branch of tress that chosen and not really old.

3. Remove peel of the branch like to veneer sheet about 4 cm.

4. Clean the cambium that be found on the branch that removed peel and dry during

1 day or 3-4 day.

5. Make the better of soil and sand at sufficiently.

6. Patch the better on the branch that the removed peel and wrap the coconut fiber or

plastic.

7. String up and under of as branch with rope.

8. Splash grafting regularly.

9. Wait until the root growth.

10. Cut grafting in under of pack if already have a lot of roots.

3.5 Operational Definition

According to Mr Suparman (2002:3) Grafting is a technique vegetative plant

with stimulate appear root in crotch so that can be planted as plant new. Manner

stimulate appear root with peel epidermis branch furthermore branch that peel after

that give soil media.

 Below is the tools to graft :

3.6 Techniques of Collecting the Data

The techniques used by the writer to collect data in this study were conducted by

experiment technique by giving to observation.

3.7 Techniques of Analyzing the Data

The data obtained through the experiment and then analyzed descriptively
supported by various literature sources, then from the information received. The
writer colleted the data and finally the writer analyzed the data related to the
problems in order to reach the solution which has been discussed.
 CHAPTER IV

RESEARCH FINDING

In this chapter, the writer would like to present result and discussion

4.1 Result

4.1.1 Mango Plant Use Soil and Water Media

From the picture above grafting use soil water media, where the condition of

grafting poorly but the grafting use this soil media not yet outside of the root cause

have factors that is weather, sometimes rain and sometimes hot, the grafting can

impact of temperature, the temperature conflict with plant. The plants make the

process root in grafting not yet outside and the grafting make the process as place

for ant hill, the problem it will be hardly outside of the root then, that stem graft will

experience not well and then the grafting of mango plant will be die. The factors of

grafting is “by any chance” do not graft branch that is too young or too old because

the branch there is too old will make the root hard to come out and the branch that is

too young will be easily broke and take long time to bear fruit.
 4.1.2 Mango Plant Use Sand and Fiber Coconut media

from the picture above, it is grafting use sand and coconut fiber as the media,

where the conditions are pretty good grafting so that the grafting use this sand as the

media already grow bud or root outside. This grafting almost success although it

have a problem as the stem to young that make growing of the root slowly or shoot

slowly and the stem easy to breakable and slow to bear fruit. In this plants that have

two grafting that effect hard to the root of mango for outside.

4.2 Discussion

In hypothesis that I tell in watchfulness found verification that grafting uses this

sand coconut fiber media faster grows the root as compared to use soil water media.

By that very fact root outside or bud outside that is uses sand and coconut fiber as

the media. According my hypothesis that uses this sand media better at because

when we do grafting to use chemicals, that is “plastic” it’s make the process the

temperature not well because the contain of plastic not well for grafting only the

effective to coconut fiber media example if the grafting use soil water media so the
grafting will place for ant hill, it’s make the stem will be not well and then can be

suffer and died.

According to Suparman (2002:3) Do not graft branch that is too young or too

old because the branch there is too old will make the root hard to come out and the

branch that is too young will be easily broke and take long time to bear fruit. Should

in graft is one grafting one stem cause at afraid if in one stem but the grafting more

so the plant will be die.

 CHAPTER V

CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

In this chapter, the writer would like to present conclusion and suggestion

5.1 Conclusions

In this part the researcher present conclusion of this paper as follow:

1. Grafting good for grow plants because grafting is a technique vegetative plant

with stimulate appear root in crotch so that can be planted as plant new.

2. Grow faster for grafting use sand and coconut fiber media because sand as the

water absorption to better than soil.

5.2 Suggestions

Base on the finding the researcher has three suggestions, there are:

1. If you want the grafting not difficult for you and you need look how the root

outside, you can changes with water media because this water media very simple

and you can look development already the root outside. If you want use sand

media and soil media the result is well but you do not look development the root

outside.

2. When you want to graft best use plants that has cambium good else if you want

to use plastic, it’s better if you make holes in that plastic as a place for the air

circulation, so that it can be known the difference between the using of plastic

and the using of fiber..
