CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

1.1. Background

Have you realized that chili’s price has increased drastically lately? Well this is what
happened at the Kwitang traditional market, Central Jakarta. Based on Liputan6.com (2019),
it has been said that Bird’s eye Chili’s price has increased to an astonishing Rp.120.000/ kg.
One of the traders, Nur (58), from the Kwitang traditional market, said that the price of
Capsicum Annuum has increased about Rp.30.000 since a few days ago.

There are several reasons on why the chili’s price has increased lately, one of them are
because of long dry season. Based on Liputan6.com (2019), One of the traders, Nur (58), said
that he thinks that the thing that has been making the supplier put a high price on the chili is
because of the long dry season. As you can see, supplier can also affect the price of chili. And
because of that, we could know that the chain on how the chili is distributed affects the price,
based on bps.com, the chain on how the chili is distributed is Farmer  Distributor 
Consumer (us), and logically, if for example, a long dry season appeared, this will lower the
production of the chili, making the farmers (suppliers) put a high price on the chili, and if that
happens the distributor will sell even more expensive, to gain profit of course, selling to us at
a very high price. However, when the price of chili drops, it drops drastically, making the
price very unstable.

There are many solutions that could be offered to solve this problem. The continuous hot
weather in Indonesia halts the growth of many plants, including the Capsicum Annuum plant.
This is because in hot weather, rain doesn't come very often, therefore leaving the plants
unwatered, causing the plants to die or grow slower. Getting water from the river is also hard,
because the hot weather causes some of the water to evaporate. This is why we need to make
man made water bodies. This way, there is more water sources to water the plants. Another
solution is to try to experiment with different colors of light to Capsicum Annuum plant. This
means that the plants will be grown indoors. Since the hot sunlight causes the plants to die
because of the lack of water, there might be a possibility that if we grow Capsicum Annuum
with different colors of light, it can grow better even without the need of too much water.

From both solutions, we chose to experiment to grow with different colors of light. This
is because there is a possibility that different colors of light might give different outcomes on
the plant. The quality, the attention given to the plant, and the growth rate of the plant are
some of the factors that might be affected. This is why we chose to do a research with the title
"The Effect of Different Colors of Light Towards the Height of Capsicum Annuum Plant".

1.2. Research Problem

The research problems are:

1. How long does it take for Capsicum annuum to grow it’s first leaf after exposed to
different colors of light?
2. What type of colors is the most effective in enhancing Capsicum annuum height?

1.3. Purpose of Research

The purposes of the research:

1. To find the time needed for Capsicum annuum to grow it’s first leaf after exposed
with different colors of light.
2. To find what color of light is the most effective in enhancing Capsicum annuum
height.

1.4. Significance of Research

The significance of research is divided into 2: theoretical use which can give readers an
indirect impact to the daily life and practical use which can give readers a direct impact to the
daily life.

1. Practical use:
Readers could now grow Capsicum annuum crops efficiently in dry weather, where
water is scarce. They could use our experiment in growing Capsicum annuum plant
using different colors of light, then pick the color of light where Capsicum annuum
plant grows best.
2. Theoretical use:
The theoretical use of this experiment is to discover the effect of different colors of
light towards the growth Capsicum annuum plant. Discovering these facts will
enrich the world’s knowledge in science.

1.5. Boundaries of Research

Our research will be more focused on :

1. 3 types of light colors:

a. blue light, with a wavelength of 450nm-495nm. It promotes vegetative
growth, strong root growth, and intense photosynthesis.
b. green light, with a wavelength of 495nm-570nm. It gets reflected when it
touches the leaves, but some of the light helps to produce chlorophyll.
c. violet light, with a wavelength of 380nm-445nm. It enhances aroma, color,
and taste of plants.
2. Capsicum annuum plant.
3. The initial height of the plant when it is going to be exposed to different colors of
light is 5cm.
4. Time needed for the first leaf to grow after being exposed to different colors of
light

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY

3.1. Place & Time

The place of our research will be taking place in Reyna’s house, specifically in her garage.
The time of our research would be after the plants’ height have reached 5 cm normally (under
the sun), and the research will go on for about 1-2 months.

3.2. Method

There are several methods that are used in an experiment, such as experiment, observation,
study literature and more. But in this experiment, we will be using the observation and
experiment method. Generally, we use the scientific method, which consists of reading
literature and articles, constructing a hypothesis, doing experiments, analyzing and
concluding the data, and then presenting the results. We used these methods to find the
answers to our research problem.

3.3. Variables

a. Independent Variables:
1. The colors of light used for each pot that contains 5 seeds each (colors of
light used: violet, blue, green, white and sunlight)
b. Dependent Variables:
1. The height of the plant after being exposed to different colors of light
2. The time it takes for the first leaf to come out after being exposed to different colors
of light
c. Controlled Variables:
1. the amount of seeds planted on each pot
2. The type of soil used
3. the height of the plants after germination when it is going to be exposed to different
color of light
4. same brand, size, and material of pot
5. Same amount of water given to the plant
d. Control group:
1. The pot of plants which is exposed only to the white light
3.4. Research Instruments

3.4.1. Apparatus

1. Gloves
2. Ruler
3. Watering pot
4. Small shovel

3.4.2. Materials

1. 5 pots
2. 1 huge pot
3. 40 Capsicum annuum seeds,
4. Water
5. Soil
6. 4 different colors of light bulb (white, blue, green, violet)
7. 4 boxes
8. glue gun
9. glue gun refill
10. 4 plant saucers
11. 4 electric cables
3.5. Research procedure

3.5.1. Logic of Thinking

3.5.2. Working Process
1. Plant all the 40 seeds in the huge pot, make sure that the seeds are distanced enough
from each other. Water the seeds using a watering can twice every day.
2. Keep watering the seeds, and if the seeds has developed a shoot, measure the height
of the small shoots every 2 days using a ruler.
3. Keep doing the routine, and if you find at least 25 shoots with the height of 5 cm
each, you are ready to transfer it to separate pots.
4. Transfer 5 shoots in one pot, so that each of the five pots have 5 shoots each.
Remember to distance the shoots enough from each other. Also, make sure that you
transfer the shoots carefully; not breaking the roots or other parts of the shoot, so
that the shoots could survive.
5. Do this in a room that is usually kept dark, but right now, turn on the lights so that
you can see. Take a big box and place it in a way that the opening faces forward.
Place a plate saucer inside the box, then place a pot inside the box on top of the
plate saucer. Do this to 3 other pots, leave one pot.
6. Now glue a white light to the top of the box, make sure that the glowing part is
facing directly to the pot. Plug the bulb cable to a socket with a switch. Turn the
switch on, allowing the light bulb to shine the plant. Do this using the green, violet,
and blue light bulbs to the other boxes. After that, turn off the lights completely.
7. Place the last pot outside where there is sufficient sunlight.
8. Water all the plants twice a day. Take pictures of the plants every 4 days, and while
you’re at it, take note of the height of all 25 plants. Don’t forget to take note on the
time it takes for each plant to grow it’s first leaf.

3.5.3. Data Analysis Technique

The technique we use to analyze the data is:

1. Measuring the height (in cm) of it to determine how different colors of light
enhance Capsicum annuum’s height.
2. Observing the first leaf that came out of the Capsicum annuum plant.
