Lesson 1:
PLANT PROPAGATION
WHAT IS PROPAGATION
MEANS?
-It is a production of new individuals
from a selected plant
having all the characteristic of the
original one.
TYPES OF PLANT PROPAGATION
1. Sexual propagation
2. Asexual propagation

PART OF THE PLANT

SEED
SEXUAL PROPAGATION
-A type of plant propagation
(multiplying, reproducing, or breeding
new plants) that is done through the use
of seeds.
-This seed has the capacity to germinate
and grow.
-Plants that produce seeds are called
spermatophytes.

1. Leaf Cutting
2. Simple layering
3. Air layering or Marcotting
4. Budding
5. Grafting

WHAT IS LEAF CUTTING?
This technique uses the leaf of the plant
place into the water in order to have
roots.
Some, but not all, plants can be
propagated from just a leaf or a section
of a leaf. Leaf cuttings of most plants will
not generate a new plant; they usually
produce only a few roots or just decay
HOW LEAF CUTTING LOOK LIKE?

-
WHAT IS SIMPLE LAYERING?
Simple layering – Simple layering is done
by bending a stem until the middle
touches the soil. Push the center of the
stem underground and hold it in place
with a U-shaped pin. Roots will form
along the part of the stem that’s
underground.
HOW SIMPLE LAYERING LOOK LIKE?

-
WHAT IS AIR LAYERING?
Also known as “Marcotting Method”

Air layering is an old method used to

propagate plants.

It is useful for propagating a few plants of

relatively large size for special purposes.

Some tropical trees that are difficult to root

from cuttings are still propagated by this
method.
HOW AIR LAYERING LOOK LIKE?

-
WHAT IS GRAFTING?
Grafting is a technique used by farmers
and scientists to attach the tissue of one
plant to the tissue of another.
It's a horticultural technique whereby
tissues from one plan are inserted in
those of another so that the two sets of
vascular tissues may join together. This
vascular joining is called inosculation.
HOW GRAFTING LOOKS LIKE?

-
WHAT IS BUDDING?
-A bud is cut from a plant such as a rose
and a sliver of bark from a wild rose
(stock) is removed, the rose bud (scion)
is placed against the stock and a
purposely developed wide elastic with a
staple is used to keep the bud against
the stock.

HOW TO MAKE
Steps for making an air layer
MARCOTTING
include:

1. Select suitable type of tree

2. Select healthy branch
3. Cincture (ring bark) of about 2
to 3 inches where you want the
root to form on the tree
4. Pack area with moist sphagnum
or peat moss.
5. Cover moss with polyethylene
plastic and tie each end.
6. Check to make sure moss
remains moist until roots form.
7. Cut the marcot just below the
ball of sphagnum
HOW TO MAKE GRAFTING
Steps for making an grafting
include:

1. Choose young branch as

rootstock
2. Cut the scion in a V-shape using
a sharp cutter
3. Split the branch of the rootstock
4. Attach or insert the scion into
the rootstock
5. Tie rootstock and scion
altogether with grafting tape
6. Cover it with plastic bag and tie
the bottom part
7. Just wait for how many weeks.
