CHAPTER I

1.1 INTRODUCTION

As vehicles increase in numbers, so does the need in a parking area. A car park

is somewhere a vehicle is safely stored when it is not currently in use, it provides a

shelter for vehicles so that when the owner of the vehicle comes back it is still going to

be intact. There are however some problems caused by parking a car, one of them is on

the street parking, there are times where motorists cannot find an empty space or an

area for them to park their car, so instead they park on the road, this causes additional

load for the traffic in that specific road where the car has been parked.

Green building is the practice of constructing or modifying structures to be

environmentally responsible, sustainable and resource-efficient throughout their life

cycle. This includes efficiently using energy, water and other natural resources,

protecting occupant health, improving employee productivity and reducing waste,

pollution and environmental degradation. A Green building is a building that reduces or

eliminates negative impacts to the environment. This can preserve precious natural

resources and improves our quality of life. It is also a method of wisely using resources

to create high quality, healthier and more energy-efficient homes, and commercial

buildings.

Taguig City University or TCU, a Philippine local university, was established

through Ordinance No. 29, Series of 2004 of the Sangguniang Bayan ng Taguig oh the

6th day of September 2004 at the Municipal Government of Taguig. It was located at
General Santos Avenue Upper Bicutan Taguig City. It is Pamantasan ng Taguig PnT,

later renamed Taguig City University TCU.

1.2 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

As Taguig city university becomes more developed and popular, the number of

students and and staff increased, and some of them has their private mode of

transportation. Because of this, the need in a parking space increased accordingly. At

present time, there are no proper parking space in the campus to properly

accommodate the number of vehicles that needs to be parked. As a result, other

motorists tend to park their vehicles where they see an open space, and this behavior

causes the roads to become crowded inside the campus, making it difficult for other

vehicles to use the roads properly. This also causes problems in terms of safety and

security, accidents can occur because of crowded roads and improper parking, and

parked vehicles can be stolen because it is in an open space without something or

someone guarding their vehicles. This can also leave a bad impression on other visiting

people that isn't from Taguig city university.

This study is about the proposal of a 3-storey parking green building with roof

deck that will provide the necessary parking space for the students and staff of Taguig

city university. The researchers want to make a study on this because it is a necessity

that they can't ignore. And they believe that this will help make the roads of TCU to

become much safer, less crowded, and more aesthetically pleasing.

1.3 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The purpose of this study is to obtain proper parking area in Taguig City University

so as to avoid congestion and disorganization of the surroundings. This study seeks to

answer the following problems:

• How will this Three Storey Parking Green Building guarantee the privacy and

safety of all vehicles parked in this Building?

• How will the structure address the problem of vehicles in terms of:

• Type;

• Volume

• ?

• How will the Green Building be ecosystem friendly?

• What measure should be implemented to address the problem of no proper

allocation of parking areas of vehicles that result to over-crowding and

congestion of the walkway?

• What structural design be adopted to help save parking space?

1.4 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The objective of this study aims to offer a three Storey Parking Building that will

1. Construct a Parking Building a safe place as a designated place for the vehicle

2. Be an efficient structure to carry the volume and types of vehicle

3.Develop a Green building that uses a natural resource and emphasizes the uses of

3R (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle).

4.Help reduce the effects on parking in any area of the Taguig City University campus

that causes congestion

5.Design a Three-Storey structure that have a proper and designated place for every

type of vehicles.

6. To be able to address the current and possible issues and concern that is present at

the location of the project

1.6 SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

SCOPE:

This research study was conducted in response to the data that is needed for the

Parking Green Building in the TCU area of Taguig City. The aspects that will be looked

into are the methods, strategies, vehicle facilities, concern, issues and proposed parking

solutions. This study will include the design of architectural and structural members
such as Beams, Slabs, Footings and columns and does not include the MEFPS and

Geotechnical design for this study

LIMITATION:

For the Three Storey Parking Green Building, it will occupy atleast 70 vehicles,

and 40 motorcycles, maximum weight of 11kN (1 Tons), and a vertical clearance of 3m.

This cannot occupy the types of vehicles such Jeepney and Buses. This will prioritize

for the staff of Justice Hall and Upper Bicutan National Higshchool.

1.7 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Car parking is one of the major facilities that Taguig City University doesn't have.

TCU doesn't have a car parking area, thus results in the scattered and disorganised

parking of motorists. The findings of this study provides a direct solution to this problem,

by providing a secured space for the vehicles to occupy. It also helps eliminate the

congestion and overcrowding in the campus.

Green roofs can also help reduce the distribution of dust and particulate matter

throughout the city, as well as the production of smog. This can play a role in reducing
greenhouse gas emissions and adapting urban areas to a future climate with warmer

summers.

STUDENTS AND STAFF

This will benefit the staff and the students as they will no longer have to worry

about where they will park their vehicles. parking is easier because they already know

they can park their car and they do not have to rush to the place they are staying. It also

benefits students and staff as they can expect their vehicles to be safe and secure. It

will also be a favor to the students because they will guarantee that they will be safe on

the walk way.

SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION/UNIVERSITIES

It will also provide a benefit to the Administration / University because if there

have a proper parking, it becomes organized and hassle-free to see the surrounding of

Taguig City University. It will also help the University not to be overcrowded.

RESEARCHERS

This study will help us because it adds knowledge and information every time we

conduct our research.

It will also help us, not only for the completion of our project but it will also help us to

have self-esteem in communicating with other people and with our professor, time

management and interacting with each other in performing plan and some research.
1.8 DEFINITION OF TERMS

CAD-Computer-aided drafting(CAD)-Is the use of computer system to aid in the

creation, modification, analysis, or optimization of a design. CAD software is used to

increase the productivity of the designer, improve the quality of the design, improve

communication through documentation, and to create a database for manufacturing.

CAD output is often in the form of electronic files for print, machining, or other

manufacturing operations.

Architectural-It refers to the term that describe a building or other structures

Beam-Is a structural element that primarily resist loads apply

Column-transmit the load from ceiling/roof slab and beam, including its own weight to

the foundation

Footing-the lower part of a foundation of a column or wall

Green Building-refers to both a structure and the application of processes that are

environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building life cycle.

Slab-a broad, flat, somewhat thick piece of stone, wood, or other solid material,

Structural Design-it refers to the strength and stability of structures

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

FOREIGN LITERATURE

The population of the world is continuously on the increase and town and cities

have grown up around their public transport system. The increasing population and

expanding urban centers have been accomplished by increasing car ownership and

increasing demand for movement for various purposes.

Multistory parking has come with a number of reliefs since they come with a no.

of advantages such as optical utilization of spaces, for comfort for driver since the stress

of struggling for parking space is taken of, more security and environmental harmony.

This research presents the design of a multi-storey car park for the mitigation of

traffic challenges in public areas using various case studies. various design aspect

which are considered are arrangements of deck and ramp, planning the dimensions, the

bay width, aisle width, ramp dimensions, planning grid, alignment paths to exit barriers,
means of escape distances, travel distances from the car to the destination, security,

visibility, space allowances and lift provision. Multi-storey car parking are designed for

capacity of about 400 to 500 cars. Larger capacity tends to increase the time for

unparking a car. About 5 floor is also the upper limit for the same reason. The parking

floors, the ramp, the entrance and the exits should be well lighted.

FOREIGN LITERATURE

Buildings are found to be both, one of the biggest consumer of energy and

producer of greenhouse gases. It has become a global issue. According to the National

Institute of Building Sciences(USA), buildings generate 35 percent of the carbon dioxide

(the primary greenhouse gas associated with climate change), 49 percent of the sulphur

dioxide, and 25 percent of the nitrogen oxide found in the air. Since buildings are

accountable for this scenario, it has imposed an immediate requirement to not only think

of, but implement sustainability in every new construction instantly. This will render us a

sustained environment and a healthy ecosystem. Green Buildings are buildings that

subscribe to the principle of conscientious handling of natural resources, which means

causing as little environmental interference as possible, using environment friendly

materials, requires low operational energy, utilizes renewable sources of energy to fulfil

its requirements, follows high-quality and longevity as a guideline for construction and

last but not least, must be economically viable. Albeit the problem is common in

developing nations. The paper focuses on green design as a vital transformation of

contemporary architecture practiced in developing nations. It endeavours to present

some environmental and physical design approaches for green buildings in promptly

developing countries chiefly India. In this regard, the study presents hands on analysis

of basics and principles of green architecture, theories and viewpoints outlined in the

field and also the analysis of efficacious cases of environment friendly buildings in India.

LOCAL LITERATURE

In Philippines, there is a big problem in parking because of the highly increasing

number of vehicles which has a big impact in the commuters, this lead the creation of

Real-Time Viewing Automated Parking System that helps the parking congestion

especially in mall parking and other establishment. The system uses proximity sensors

for the prototype to detect the vehicles. The driver can use mobile phone to access the

web application and reserve the slot for parking while the system administrator assists

the transaction. This parking system can lessen the struggling on finding parking

availability and tool for transportation trend.
