TOPIC DEVELOPMENT OF THE PERIODIC TABLE OF ELEMENTS

GRADE LEVEL 8
TIME ALLOTMENT 60 minutes
Learning Competency and Objective
The students should be able to…
1. Differentiate between heat and temperature at the molecular level; (S8FE-Ig-29)

ELICIT
 The students will review their previous lesson in a form of a game entitled “Pass It to Me”
where a badge is pass as the music is playing and the last student who holds the badge will
answer the question about their previous lesson.

ENGAGE
 The teachers swabs a rubbing alcohol on the students’ back of hand.
a. What do you observe about the alcohol?
b. Is the alcohol colder than the air? How can we test that?
c. Why do you think that the alcohol fells cool?
EXPLORE
 Group the students and let them perform the activity
Materials:
4 containers with differing head conduction rates
Procedure:
1. Predict the temperature of each container
Guide question: How do you think each will feel if you place your hand in them?
2. Design an experiment and create a data table to test their hypothesis.
EXPLAIN
 Discuss the data with the class. Let the students differentiate between heat and temperature
by asking the following questions:
1. Why do some materials feel cooler? How could we test that hypothesis?
2. How does you determine hot and cold?
ELABORATE
 The students will perform another activity.
Materials:
1 pail of water at 50 degree C
1 cup of water at 100 degree C
2 basin of cold water

Procedure:
1. Take a look at the pail of water at 50 degree C and cup of water at 100 degree C.
Guide Question:
a. In which of these containers are the molecules moving faster?

2. Put the pail of water in one basin of water and put the cup of water in another basin of water.
Guide Question:
a. What is the difference in the temperature of the 2 basin of water?
b. What does the activity tells about heat and temperature?
EVALUATE
 Each group will share their own understanding about the difference of heat and temperature
in any way they want. (In a form of song, poem, illustration )
