Plastic Waste on a Bituminous Pavement

Introduction:
The major threat to the environment is the disposal of waste plastic which results to
pollution and global warming. As a Civil Engineer in a highway structure our major problem
are the potholes and corrugation. In order to address these problems, Plastic pavement will
be a better solution.
The concept of this project is to use waste plastic in order to reduce the amount of
bitumen in a usual mixture of Bituminous Pavement which gives more durability and
strength to the constructed pavement.

Objective:
1. To design the asphalt pavement with aggregate-plastic- bitumen mix.
2. Increase strength and better performance of constructed pavement.
3. Reduce the need of bitumen in construction of asphalt pavements.
4. To reduce plastic waste (Plastic is a non-degradable waste, causes green-
house effect and global warming).
5. Develop technology which is eco-friendly.
How can we apply then the principles in Project Management with this
kind of project?
I. Planning
In this stage, the main purpose of the project is to come up with the
following perspectives:
1. Integrate plastic waste into a bituminous pavement without
compromising the strength and durability of the structure and at
the same time it will withstand different weather.
2. To know exactly the right proportion of plastic waste and the right
plastic for this project.
3. To eradicate plastic waste to address global warming.
To attain this kind of perspective, the following should be organized:
1. Create an environment friendly technology that will process the
plastic waste into a raw material for a ready use.
2. By-products should be tested and conform to the existing
standards of the department.
3. Stakeholders, Contractors, as well as the local politicians and inter
agency should cooperate and make a stand to implement
segregation of waste in order to have a straight forward insight to
this kind of project.

II. Organizing
The success of this project rely on the right people who are
competent and committed to help in a green project.
- The Research Section that will be responsible in the proper
construction methodology, the amount of plastic waste to be
added and the right plastic waste to be used. Different plastic
might have different behavior/ chemical reaction to the
bitumen.
- The Planning Section that will evaluate the methods to be
applied and provide accurate plans and specification.
- The Implementing Section and Quality Assurance Section that
will take over during the construction stage. In charge to the
proper application and material specification.
- The Administrative section that will do the advertisement/
posting of events to the public for proper dissemination and
awareness.

III. Securing
During the research stage all necessary permits should be
processed. There will be a collaboration of work between agency-
to- agency like the DOST, DENR, DPWH, DILG and the like in
order to have a smooth and well oriented application of this
project. It will undergo several trials and testing that will conform
to the existing standards. No commencement of work if there will
be a non-conformance to at least of the agency involve.

As to the manpower, the stake holder and the contractor should
have a skilled and well
