Sling Usage Guidelines

PURPOSE:
To minimize the hazards and the risks associated with the hazards while
carrying out Slinging Operation for lifting, unloading & shifting activity.
.
SCOPE: Applicable to Slinging Operation activity carried out any where
under execution function.

RESPONSIBILTY:
Site in-charge / Site engineer / Safety officer / Vendor Supervisor /
Workmen

PROCEDURE:
 Find out the weight to be lifted
 Check the working load marked on the sling; do not use it for any
load in excess – if not marked to be tested at site if practicable.
 Do not use fibre or wire rope slings for hot loads and keep them
away from welding or flame cutting operation
 Examine all sling before use ; reject any that are found defective,
hand splicing slings shall not be used.
 Ensure the sling meant of use is having a valid third party test
certificate( competent person’s certificate)for a load
 Refer the sling chart to verify the lifting capacity of a sling for a
load, if the marking is not available in the sling.
 Slings should be protected by suitable packing from sharp edges or
corners of the load
 Rope slings should not be dragged along floor
 A sling double round a shackle has a Safe Working Load (S.W.L)
equivalent only to that of a single part of the rope.
 Take your hands away before the crane takes the load and stand
clear.
 Ensure the load is free before lifting
 Use only recognized signal to the crane driver
 Lower loads on to a adequate battens to prevent damage to the
slings
 Return slings to store after the job is completed.
 If the site prepared sling is used, ensure minimum three bull-dog
clamps are used at each end.
 10% of cut or damage of any type of wire rope slings will be
discarded from site.
