I am working towards achieving my criminal justice degree with the aspiration to become

a Delaware state trooper. As a trooper, you are assigned a troop which could be located

anywhere throughout the state of Delaware, and from there you have a handful of duties that you

must be attending to. You’re on the road, making traffic stops, responding to calls from worried

civilians, aiding stranded motorists, making arrests, assisting other troopers or officers, as well as

responding to anything that occurs that requires police response.

To become a Delaware state trooper you must meet the following requirements; Must be

21 prior to completion of academy, have a high school diploma or GED, and additionally have at

least a minimum of 60 semester credits, have a valid drivers license with one year of driving

experience, no felony convictions, and you must meet medical requirements such as having no

worse than 20/40 in each eye and having normal hearing. Another large aspect of the recruiting

process is being physically fit enough to perform the duties that a police officer needs to have

while on the job. Personally, I am already disqualified due to my eyesight being 20/200 in each

eye, well above what is a disqualifier, and in turn I am currently saving money to have surgery

performed on my eyes. I also will continue to work on my physical stamina and strength by

going to the gym and running when I have free time. Increasing my times and strength will help

me get the upper advantage when preliminary testing is occurring, plus through various exercises

that I’ll do while in the academy.

While you’re in the Delaware Police Academy and receiving training, you’re paid a

salary of $50,000. It is a 22-week live-in academy, followed up by 12 weeks of field training

with veteran officers. After your training is complete you begin to make a salary of $64,805 a

year. With the Delaware State Police it is mandatory to retire at the age of 55, but you have the

option to retire after 20 years of service, with a great pension plan. During your time with the

state police you are given six weeks of paid vacation, state health insurance, tax-deferred

medical/childcare program, and a blood bank membership.
