The Vortex Challenge

12- Lazarus

Objectives / Purpose:

The main ojective of The Vortex Challenge booth is to participate in SciMaTech exhibit. In
addition, this booth will also facilitate how fast student picks-up or acquires instructions.
Moreover, this concept aims to develop the mental capabilities of students in terms of Science,
Mathematics and Technology.

General Instuction:

Vortex Challenge is a game wherein the participants need to accomplish the challenges within
15 minutes. If he/she will succesfully finished it, the booth owners will grant them a prize. Upon
entering the game they need to pay first for the entrance fee of 10 pesos. There are three
challenges. The first challenge is to make the egg float in water. The second challenge is to
answer a mathematics question. And the last challenge, make a little ballet dancer (complete
and exact instructions will be provided.

Materials:

Copper wire

AA Battery/ Power Cell

½" x ⅛" Neodymium Disc Magnet

Pliers/ Wire Cutter

Crepe Paper/ Construction Paper

Shoe glue/ Hot Glue

2 pcs. Egg

A clear drinking glass

Salt

Vinegar

Folder

Procedure:
To accomplish the first task, you need to make the egg float in water using another egg, a salt,
or a vinegar, participants are only allowed to pick one of the three and only has one trial. If
failed to do the task, he/she will be eliminated and will not proceed to the next round.

To accomplish the second task, participants are obliged to answer the mathematics question
provided by the booth facilitators. Participants have three trials to solve the problem. If failed to
answer on the third trial, he/she will be eliminated and will not proceed to the next round.

To accomplish the last task, cut a long piece of wire off your spool, I started with about a 10”
long piece. Lay it on the template of your choice (refer to the template on the next page) and
bend as shown using 3-in 1 tool or pliers. No need to be perfect, however, try and keep your
form as symmetrical as possible. To create the base section of wire that wraps the magnets, I
recommend bending the end of the wire around the battery. Remove the battery and gently
widen the circular wire form with your fingers. Place three neodymium magnets on the negative
side of your battery. Step Four Place the motor on top of the battery so that it touches the
positive pole. The round section at the bottom of the motor must be low enough to encircle the
magnets. If properly constructed it should start to spin. If it doesn’t see our tips below. Lastly, to
make a skirt for your dancer cut a small circle of crepe then cut a slit in the center of the circle.
Slide it up onto the dancer and secure in place with a dab of hot glue.
