Final Evaluation
Culminating Task - Part 2

This culminating task will account for 15% of your final grade and is part of your final evaluation for the course.
This task is individual. Therefore, everyone submits their own original work for evaluation. Any copying will
result in a mark of zero. You will hand in ALL these pages when you complete this task.

Circuit Quiz Board

For this task, you will design and build a quiz board that works using the principles of current electricity.
Your quiz board will have 10 questions that are based on two units of study, chemistry and ecology.
Design Question: How can you build a quiz board that will light up when a question is paired with
the correct answer?
Hint: When a question is paired up with a correct answer, it completes the circuit causing a bulb to light
up.
Materials – will be provided in class
Aluminum foil – 10 strips 1 D-cell battery (1.5 V) File folder
Masking tape – to act as an insulator conducting wires 1 light bulb
Hole punch scissors markers, pencil
crayons

Procedure for Making the Quiz Board

1. Develop 10 quiz questions for each unit (chemistry and ecology) with the correct answers. You
will show these to the teacher. Make them with a variety of difficulty levels, from easy to
challenging.
2. For each unit, choose your TOP FIVE questions. Write them in order of increasing difficulty
and assign points for each question. Write the points next to the question number.
3. Copy your questions and points into the left column of the quiz board, keeping the same order
that you wrote in step 2 above. Change the order of the answers and copy them in the right
column of the quiz board (scramble the answers).
4. Using a file folder, glue or tape the quiz sheet securely to the front of the card stock.
5. Using the hole punch, make a hole next to each question AND next to each answer.
6. On the back of the quiz board, draw lines from the hole of the question to the hole of the correct
answer. You will have a series of criss-crossing lines when you are done.
7. Cut out 10 strips of aluminum foil with the dimensions of 1 cm x 30 cm.
8. Place the foil strips over each line that you drew to match up questions to their
answers. The foil should be placed in such a manner as to make a complete circuit
when hooked up to the light bulb. Trim where necessary. Secure the foil strip in
place with the masking tape.
9. Use the masking tape to insulate the aluminum strip.
10. Repeat this until all foil strips have been placed and taped. Your quiz board is
done!

Procedure for Completing the Circuit

11. Obtain a D-cell battery, light bulb and two wires.
12. Connect the wires, the cell and the bulb as shown in the diagram below. The bulb should sit on
the positive side of the cell. Attach these circuit components to your quiz board with tape. Make
sure everything is secure.
13. Test your circuit board to make sure it works. Touch the wire from the battery to the foil beside
the question, then touch the other wire to the hole beside the correct answer. The bulb should
light.
14. If your bulb does not light, it may be a problem with your circuit set-up or with your quiz board.
You will have to problem solve to find the solution.
15. When you are satisfied it all works correctly, tape a protective sheet of paper over your
aluminum strips to cover the back of your quiz board. Tape at the top only.
16. Add any additional creative touches to your board to make it visually appealing.
Your circuit quiz board is ready for competition day.

Answer the discussion questions on the next sheet to complete this assignment.
