(Exploratory Course)
Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our
dear learners, can continue your studies and learn while at home.
Activities, questions, directions, exercises, and discussions are
carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.
Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall
guide you step-by-step as you discover and understand the lesson
prepared for you.
Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on
lessons in each SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on
completing this module or if you need to ask your facilitator or
your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the lesson.
At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-
check your learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity
and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these.
In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the
Teacher are also provided to our facilitators and parents for
strategies and reminders on how they can best help you on your
home-based learning.
Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary
marks on any part of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in
answering the exercises and tests. And read the instructions
carefully before performing each task.
If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty
in answering the tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult
your teacher or facilitator.
Thank you.

Let Us Learn!

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to
help you master the different kinds of technical drawings and interpret each.
The scope of this module permits it to be used in many different learning
situations. The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of
students. The lessons are also arranged to follow the standard sequence of
the course. But the order in which you read them can be changed to
correspond with the textbook you are now using.

This module has one lesson:

• Lesson 1- Identify and Interpret Technical Drawings

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. identify different technical drawings (TLEIAEPAS9-12PITD-lla-12);

2. recognize components, assemblies, or objects (TLEIAEPAS9-12PITD-
llb-c-13.1.1);
3. correctly identify the dimensions of the key features of the objects
depicted in the drawing (TLEIAEPAS9-12PITD-llb-c-13.1.2);
4. interpret the symbols used in the drawing (TLEIAEPAS9-12PITD-llb-c-
13.1.3); and
5. validate the drawing against job requirements or equipment
(TLEIAEPAS9-12PITD-llb-c-13.1.4).

INFORMATION SHEET

Congratulations! You have done a great job! Now you ready to learn how
to identify and interpret different kinds of technical drawings. Keep up the
good work!
Simple and complex electronic circuits need diagrams to be used as
reference in assembling, designing, modifying, and troubleshooting.
Electronic diagrams are schematic, pictorial, wiring, and block diagrams.
Each one of these diagrams has its own unique characteristics in presenting
the circuit.

Types of Electronic Diagrams

Illustrated by the writer

A. Schematic Diagram
A schematic diagram shows the complete electrical connections
between components using their symbols and lines. It shows the
components used and on how they are interconnected with each other. Each
graphic symbol is also accompanied with a reference designation to
distinguish it from other similar symbols. It does not illustrate the physical
size, shape or chassis location of the component parts and devices.

Illustrated by the writer

B. Block Diagram

A block diagram represents the main components of a complex

system in the form of blocks interconnected by lines that represent their
relation. It is the simplest form of electrical drawing as it only highlights the
function of each component and provides the flow of process in the system.

4
The blocks of squares, rectangles or triangles represent components, group
of components or units of equivalent.

Photo is personally taken by the writer

C. Pictorial Diagram

A pictorial diagram shows the pictures of the actual components

and wiring connections although it does not provide the exact size of
components. It displays the exact shape in proportion to the actual
component or device.

Illustrated by the writer

D. Wiring diagram

A wiring diagram is a simplified, easy to follow diagram that shows

internal or external connections drawn as simple as possible to trace out
the connection of a circuit. It represents electrical components in their
approximate physical location using their specific symbols and their
interconnections using lines. Vertical and horizontal lines are used to
represent wires and each line represents a single wire that connects between
electrical components.

7
The appearance, simplicity in design and easy to understand layout are
some of the important attributes of a good electronic diagram and to achieve
this, several standards should be followed such as:

Rules for Drawing Symbols

1. Position of a symbol on a diagram does not affect its meaning.

2. Weight of a line used in drawing a symbol does not affect its meaning.

3. Symbols can be drawn in any size suited for a particular diagram. It

should be drawn in proportion to the rest of the drawing.

4. To emphasize striking difference in symbols, it is recommended that

not more than two different sizes of symbols be used for simplicity.

5. In general, a connecting line should be brought to a symbol either

vertically or horizontally, but a connecting line brought to a symbol at
an angle has no particular significance unless otherwise noted.

6. The arrowhead of a symbol may be open ( ) or closed ( ) unless

otherwise noted.

7. Reference designation of Electronic Components

Capacitor C
Diode D
Resistor R
Switch S/Sw
Transformer T
Transistor Q

When more than one symbol of a specific type of component appears

on a diagram, the letter is followed by number.

Example: C1, C2

8
8. Numerical Values of Components

The details of the type, rating; or value of a component should be

placed on a diagram adjacent to the symbol.

Example 1: C2 - (10uf/12V)

Example 2: R1 - (1/4 watt/100 Ω)

1.All resistors expressed in ohms ( Ω ) unless otherwise indicated.

2.All capacitors expressed in microfarads ( uf ) unless otherwise
indicated.

9. The layout of a diagram should show the main features prominently

and be carefully spaced to provide an even balance between blank
spaces and lines. Enough blank space should be provided for
reference information of components/symbols.

10. Lines connecting the symbols and other parts on a diagram should be
drawn either horizontally or vertically.

Illustrated by the writer

11. Dashed lines (------) used on schematic and other types of diagrams
show a mechanical linkage between components or parts of
components.

9
Let Us Practice
Day 2

Did you understand the lesson above? Well, to check if you really
understand it, let us do the True of False activity.
Are you ready? Let us begin!

meaning.
______________3. The layout of a diagram should not necessarily show the
main features prominently.
______________4. Letter T is the reference designation a capacitor in a circuit
diagram.

rules of drawing it, you are now ready to identify and draw the symbols of
each component.
Fill up the table below with the name of the component and draw its
symbol by using your basic drawing tools like pencil, ruler, and compass to
sketch the appropriate symbol that represents a component in a schematic
diagram.
Good luck and have fun!
