TLE-IA-EIM
Quarter 0 – Module 5
ANALYZE SIGNS, ELECTRICAL
SYMBOLS, AND DATA
What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you
understand Electrical Installation and Maintenance.

In this module, you will be learning about reading and interpreting specifications of
simple technical drawings and plans.

You, as a learner, will be given the understanding of the concepts and underlying
principles in analyzing signs, electrical symbols and data.

The module is talking about the following lesson:

Lesson 1 - Read and interpret electrical signs, symbols and data & analyze
electrical components and materials based on electrical signs, symbols, and
data

At the end of the module, you should be able to:

1. Identify different signs and electrical symbols.

2. Analyze electrical signs and know its descriptions.
3. Display mastery in drawing electrical symbols and signs.

1

Lesson USE APPROPRIATE MEASURING

1 DEVICES FOR SPECIFIC TASKS

& COMPUTE FOR REQUIRED DATA

Learning is fun! As an EIM student, you are also introduced to carry out
measurements and calculations. After solving problems related to measurements
and calculations, you will be introduced on how to use appropriate measuring
devices for EIM tasks. You will be introduced also on how to compute the required
data.

To enjoy learning, you are recommended to focus on the tasks you need to perform.

What’s In

LET’S REVIEW!

A system of measurement is a set of units which can be used to specify anything

can be measured.

These are the common units of measurement used in making layout and installation
of electrical materials:

Linear measures

1. English system provides the creative way on how people can measure
by themselves. For example, people measure shorter distance on the
ground with their feet. They measure long distances by their palms
which is equal to a yard.

• Inch
• Yard
• Miles

2. Metric system is a decimalized system of measurement. It exists in

several variations with different choices of base units. Metric units are
widely used around the world for personal, commercial, and scientific
purpose.

• Millimeter
• Centimeter
• Decimeter
• Meter

What is It

COMMON ELECTRICAL SYMBOLS

Electrical Symbols are small drawings or pictograms used to represent various

electrical devices in a diagram or plan of an electrical circuit. These symbols are used
in sketching schematic diagrams and electrical plans for numerous types of electrical
works. Practically any electrical fixture found in a house has a symbol that coincides
to said fixture on an electrical wiring diagram. These are very useful guide for an
electrician or electrical contractor, thus, making the wiring easier to install as well.

5
ELECTRICAL SIGNS

Your power tool with its manual may contain "WARNING ICONS" (a picture
symbol intended to alert you to, and/or to instruct you how to avoid a potentially
hazardous condition). Knowing and understanding these signs will help you operate
your tool better and more safely.

Electrical signs and stickers alert students, workers, and visitors to electrical
hazards in the area. Alerting workers to high voltage areas, electrical hazards, power
lines and other electrical equipment in the area, can help prevent fires and injuries.
Proper electrical signs can inform workers of the dangers in the area.
