Guide Questions For Final Performance Task in Pre-Calculus 1920
S.Y. 2019-2020
Unit 3 Performance Task
Exploring Ocean Waves with Trigonometric Functions
GUIDE QUESTIONS:
Based from the observations and data from the activity, answer the following guide questions.
1. How do you explain the differences/similarities in equations to the differences/ similarities in the
graphs?
2. How does changing the constant 𝑎 in 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑎𝑠𝑖𝑛(𝑏𝑥) affect the graph? The term is called the
amplitude of the function. Based on your observations, write a definition for the term amplitude.
3. How does changing the constant 𝑏 in 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑎𝑠𝑖𝑛(𝑏𝑥) affect the graph? The b term is called the
wavelength of the function. Based on your observations, write a definition for the term wavelength.
4. Could this function be modeled with 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑎𝑐𝑜𝑠(𝑏𝑥)? Why or why not?
5. Does your sine graph fit your equation perfectly? How can you account for any differences?
6. If you wanted to increase your wavelength, what would you do differently to the wave tank?
