EXPERIMENT NO. 1
VINEGAR ANALYSIS
SET – UP
In this activity, the students applied the knowledge they have learned about the topic
Stoichiometry which have been used to compute all the value needed in the report sheet. The
students understand the concept of Titration. The students conducted two (2) trials and determined
different percentage of Acetic Acid in Vinegar. In the first trial, the students computed that there
are 4.28% of Acetic Acid in Vinegar. While in the second trial, there are 4.71%. The average
percent by mass of Acetic Acid in Vinegar is 4.50%. Titration is widely used if a concentration of
a reagent or certain chemical in a solution is unknown. In this lab activity, the more the NaOH has
been added to vinegar, there are neutralization reaction happens. NaOH also known Sodium
Hydroxide is used as a base and the Vinegar is made up of Acetic Acid which is known as an acid.
As long as NaOH and Acetic Acid has been added together, the reaction occurs and it will be
shown as the solution will change or turn to pink or light pink.
Pre Lab Questions:
1.) Assuming the density of 5% acetic acid by mass solution is 1.0g/mL, determine the
volume of the acetic acid solution necessary to neutralize 25.0mL of 0.10M NaOH.
Also record this calculation on your report sheet.
Molarity: Molar mass 𝐶𝐻3 𝐶𝑂𝑂𝐻 = 60g/mol
50
Mol in 50g = 60= 0.833 mol 𝐶𝐻3 𝐶𝑂𝑂𝐻 in 1.0L solution
Molarity = 0.833M
Equation: 𝐶𝐻3 𝐶𝑂𝑂𝐻 + NaOH → 𝐶𝐻3 𝐶𝑂𝑂 Na +𝐻2 𝑂
𝐶𝐻3 𝐶𝑂𝑂𝐻 reacts 1:1 molar with NaOH Mol NaOH in 25.0mL of 0.1M solution =
25
= = 0.0025 mol NaOH
(1000)(0.21)
0.0025
Volume = (0.833)(1000)= 0.0025/0.833*1000 = 3.00 mL of the vinegar solution required.
