Section 1:

In this section you will be looking at the strategy of Asda and assessing the company’s
internal and external environments. You will analyse the impact and influence, which the
macro environment has on Asda and its business strategies. The organisation’s internal
environment and capabilities will need to be assessed in terms of its ability to respond to
external factors.

Task 1

LO1

 Applying appropriate frameworks analyse the impact and influence of the macro
environment on Asda and its strategies.

 Carry out an environment audit for the company incorporating PESTLE analysis and
Porters five force analysis.

 Using your previous analysis describe the position occupied by ASDA in the retail
market in the terms of, for example, size, growth, profitability, market standing,
product development, potential.

 Critically analyse the macro environment to determine and inform strategic


management decisions.

 Consider why it important to carry out external analysis when developing a business
strategy using ASDA as a reference.

 Analyse the internal environment and capabilities of Asda using appropriate


frameworks.

 Examine what you consider to be the core values of ASDA. What influence would
these have on the company’s strategic direction?

 Is there a vision for the company? Is there a Mission Statement?

 What are the objectives of ASDA at the present time? How do you think these
objectives have been shaped by the stakeholders in the company?

 Carry out an organisational audit using some techniques such as SWOT, value
chain analysis, BCG growth-share matrix, McKinsey 7S.

 Critically evaluate the internal environment to assess strengths and weaknesses of


an organisation’s internal capabilities, structure and skill set.

Section 2:

In this section you will be applying Porter’s Five Forces model to Asda and devising a
strategic plan for the organisation. You will apply strategic models, theories and concepts
studied in this unit to explore strategic directions available to Asda and make your own
recommendations based on your own up-to-date research.

 Applying Porter’s Five Forces models evaluate the competitive forces of the retail
market sector for Asda.

 Devise appropriate strategies to improve the competitive edge and market position
of Asda based on the outcomes of your analysis.

Task 4

 Applying a range of theories, concepts and models, interpret and devise strategic
planning for Asda. Take into consideration your findings in assignment 1 and your
recent study of strategic options

 Produce a strategic management plan for Asda that has tangible and tactical
strategic priorities and objectives.
