INTRODUCTION OF CARTOGRAPHY
What is map?
Map is a picture or representation of abstract appearance elements that
chosen from the surface of the earth which is related to the surface of the earth or
celestial bodies, which are generally depicted on a flat plane and scaled-down.
(International Cartographic Association 1973). Maps are a vehicle for storing and
presenting data on environmental conditions, a source of information for planners
and decision-makers at the development stage (Bakosurtanal 2005). The map is a
conventional description of the shape of the earth that is reduced like its appearance
when viewed vertically from above, made on a flat plane and added with writings
as explanatory (Erwin Rainsz, 1948). The map is a description of the surface of the
earth with a certain scale, drawn on a flat plane through a certain projection system
(Aryono Prihandito, 1998).
I think is that in ancient times before there was a map, to go to a place only
with the direction and shape of the stars or with a compass. By the time, the map in
paper form has been created wherein the map has begun to be filled with
information about roads, irrigation, elevation information of the earth's surface, .etc.
But now, there are very rapid changes in the field of technology so that we can
know our position directly.
