SESSION LEARNING EPISODE(SLE) MODULE ON HISTORY IN THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN THE PHILIPPINES

I. INTRODUCTION

The Philippines, a country in South East Asia, was under American, Japanese and Spanish occupation for long periods in its
history. Among all, the American rule had the most profound impact on the country's history and educational system.
During their rule, the education system then established and make the English language as the medium of instruction.

Hence, this learning episode focuses on History in the Elementary School in the Philippines.

II. OBJECTIVES

After the learning episode, BEED students are expected to:

Knowledge:

a. Clearly discuss the history of Elementary school in the Philippines.

b. Comprehend the History of elementary school in the philippines.

c. Enumerate the important events pertaining the history of elementary school.

Skill:

d. Differentiate the characteristics of Elementary school from the past up to present.

Attitude/Values:

e. Show appreciation in understanding the history of elementary school in the philippines.

VI. MODULE PROPER

A. PRIMING ACTIVITY

Anticipation Guide (10 minutes)

Group Break-out: Divide the students into 4 groups. They will be asked to perform different
tasks. Each group is given 2 minutes to perform in front of the class.

Performance Task: Perform the task as per indicated in the task card. You are given 10 minutes
to prepare. Group presentations follow after the allotted time.

Group Athena - Make Me!

• Make a drawing of how you interpret the history of elementary school in the philippines.

Group Venus - Act It Out!

• Present a play that imitates the kind of teaching process in elementary grades before.

Group Psyche - Create Me!

• Create a short poem about how elementary had been established.

Group Artemis - Compose Me!

• Compose a song about your insights of elementary school.

√ The first elementary school in the philippines is the Escuela Municipal. The school was renamed "Ateneo Municipal de
Manila" in 1865 then later became "Ateneo de Manila."

√ The elementary school was once ruled by the Spaniards and American jesuit.

√ The first rector of the school was Fr. Jose Fernandez Cuevas.

√ By the 1970's, the Ateneo de Manila Grade School included bilingual communication and social consciousness in
its curriculum.

√ To address in a more focused manner the developmental needs of the students on the onset of the 21st century,
whose population has grown so big in the course of years, the school was divided into the Primary and Middle Schools.

√ The Primary School (Prep to Grade 3), focuses on the developmemt of basic skills in literacy and numeracy
emphasizing only the essentials - Reading, Language (English and Filipino) and Mathematics.

√ Middle School (Grades 4 to 7), implements a revised curriculum meant to address the student's intellectual
growth and provide guidance through the critical period of their social and emotional development.

D. ABSTRACTION

E. APPLICATION (10 minutes)

• In your group, you are tasked to make a venn diagram consisting the past and the present characterististics of
elementary school and show what are the similarities of both.

F. ASSIGNMENT

1. Study further the history of elementary school.

2. What are the content and processes of the geography in the elementary school.
