screener for 1st-5th grade students.
● The assessment is timed (unless student
has documented accommodations).
● While program has Spanish and English
components, it was not developed as
part of a biliteracy framework.
● Acquiring Cognitive Academic Language
Proficiency in a second language takes
5-7 years on average.

How to support your child in first grade?
● Read to and with your child as often as possible in both languages.
Every evening is recommended.
● Ask your child what they are learning at school.
● Seek multiple opportunities to expose your child to Spanish.
Encourage them to teach you.
● Be Supportive of what they share with you.
● Help your child be a problem solver. Encourage your child to use
their words to express feelings in an assertive manner.
● Encourage them to write.
● Play board games that have a Math component
● Practice mental Math and skip counting.
● Discuss Math in the real world.
Closing Activity

Think about something you are proud of your child for. Write them an
encouraging note using the cards/markers on your table.

As you leave, hand us your note, and we’ll give it to your child
