Spring 2017

Dear AP English: Literature and Composition Students,

We are happy that you have taken on the rigor of an AP English class and applaud the
commitment you have made. Because our focus is on helping prepare students for the
AP English exam, we require that AP English: Literature and Composition students
Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools begin their AP study during the summer to address the following objectives:
P.O. Box 2513  To establish the expectation that reading texts for AP courses is a critical,

website: wsfcs.k12.nc.us  To establish a shared experience to begin the year’s rigorous academic work

To accomplish these goals, we expect you to read Thomas C. Foster’s How to Read
Literature Like a Professor (HTRLLAP) and your school’s text selection. Please note
that it is the student’s responsibility to read the appropriate text for their school; if a
student changes schools, s/he must complete the summer reading assignment for that
particular school.

So that we all have the same copies of the texts please reference the following ISBN
and publisher information before purchasing your copy:

How to Read Literature Like a Professor, Thomas C. Foster

ISBN: 978-0062301673 Publisher: Harper Collins Publisher

Start your summer reading with How to Read Literature like a Professor. Dr. Thomas
Foster asks you to explore and challenge a piece of literature on a deeper level than you
may have before. There is usually something else going on in a text, and the text holds
clues to a deeper meaning. You are to read and carefully annotate this text as well as the
assigned text for your school.

Instructions for annotating can be found at https://www.ramapo.edu/crw/files/2013/03/20-2.pdf.

When you have finished reading, you are to complete the attached assignment.
Please type and save your assignment so that it may be submitted to Turnitin.com. You
should also be prepared for an in-class discussion connecting the two books.
