SUBJECT : REPORT ON THE ACTIVITIES CONDUCTED IN CELEBRATION OF

MONTH OF THE OCEAN (MOO).

In line with the annual observance of Month of the Ocean (MOO) with a theme
“Together for our Reefs”, the undersigned personnel conducted/participated series of
activities in partnership with the LGU Alaminos, DENR-R1 CDD-CRFMS and other equally
concerned stakeholders.

I. LAUNCHING OF HINP FLAGSHIP MASCOTS

Flagship species is a species that symbolizes a campaign or issue, specifically

conservation awareness and action. Prior to the launching of species represented by
mascots, series of consultations with the public and local communities specifically coastal
barangays of Alaminos City was conducted for the identification of flagship species of
Hundred Islands National Park under the Coastal and Marine Ecosystem Management
Program (CMEMP). Stakeholders were able to identify damsel fish named “Damsey” as the
flagship species that will promote conservation awareness and efforts not only in HINP but
also to other coastal areas of Alaminos City. Alongside with Damsey is “Island Ranger” which
symbolizes the agencies/organizations promoting environmental conservation and
protection.

The Launching of HINP Flagship Mascots held on May 26, 2018 was started through a
motorcade parade of Damsey and Island Ranger from City proper to Lucap Wharf. The
motorcade was joined by LGU Alaminos, DENR-R1 CRFMS, DENR-CENRO Alaminos City,
BFAR, PNP, Coast Guard, DepEd, Coastal barangays of Alaminos City, HIHTROA, Motorboat
Associations and fisherfolks. Upon arrival, a short program was also conducted to officially
launch Damsey and Island Ranger as flagship species of HINP.

On the short program, Ms. Marilyn M. Racoma, Chief, DENR-R1 CDD-CRFMS,

presented the rationale of the launching activity. She said that HINP will be the first to
launch its own flagship mascots among the fifteen declared national parks in Region I. She
also reiterated the series of activities conducted prior to the above activity.

Present also during the activity was Hon. Arthur F. Celeste, City Mayor and Co-
Chairman of HINP-PAMB. On his message, he thanked all the stakeholders for their active
participation on the activity. He further invited everyone to continue supporting the city’s
programs and projects especially those intended for the protection and conservation of
pristine and rich coastal and marine resources.

Ably representing DENR Regional Director Reynulfo A. Juan during the event was
Forester Barbara M. Pernia, Chief of DENR-R1 Conservation and Development Division. She
expressed her sincerest gratitude especially to LGU Alaminos for its continuous support to
the agency’s environmental programs and projects. The launching activity is also in line with
the celebration of Ocean Month, hence, she encouraged everyone to observe and promote
the importance of ocean conservation not only for this month but for everyday life because
a healthy ocean will benefit human beings today and in the future. See attached photo
documentations during the activity for reference.

II. SCUBASURERO AND BEACH CLEAN-UP AT HINP

A SCUBASURERO and Beach Clean-up was also conducted in the Hundred Islands
National Park on May 27, 2018 relative to the celebration. This activity is being
conducted/spearheaded monthly by the HINP-PAMB as part of their commitment in the
preservation, protection and management of coastal and marine resources of Alaminos City
specifically HINP.

This month’s worthwhile activity was conducted through the collaborative efforts of
LGU Alaminos City and DENR thru CENRO Alaminos. It was also participated by some equally
concerned stakeholders such as CMAS Paui Dive Team, NCRPO CMAS PAUI, NCRPO-HPG,
Alaminos PNP, BFAR, Coast Guards, HITHTROA and Boat Associations.

A short program/orientation was conducted before proceeding to the clean-up

proper. Ms. Rosalie Aruelo, City Tourism Operation Officer II, welcomed and acknowledged
the attendance of different stakeholders on the activity. She also thanked them for the past
two years of supporting environmental endeavors of LGU Alaminos City.

Meanwhile, Mr. Augusto E. Bautista, PASu of HINP, reminded the participants that
the said activity is being conducted in line with the celebration of Month of the Ocean with
a theme “Together for our Reefs”. He also emphasized the importance of protecting and
conserving our coastal and marine resources especially coral reefs as they serve as shelter
and breeding ground to many marine species and organisms. Rich and healthy coral reefs
will result to healthy and abundant marine resources, which in the long run will benefit the
community. The celebration of Ocean Month also coincided with the celebration of
International Year of the Reef (IYOR), he added.

Four (4) islands were targeted for the SCUBASURERO and Clean-up, namely:
Childrens Island, Quezon Island, Governors Island and Pilgrimage Island. Participants were
distributed per island for the smooth and simultaneous conduct of the activity. Wastes
collected from the above islands were segregated and categorized by respective
coordinators. A total of eleven (11) trash bags were filled with wastes, with a total weight of
thirty three (33) kilos. Compared to last month’s SCUBASURERO, it was observed that the
trend of generated/collected wastes from HINP decreases. A decreasing trend of collected

wastes is a good indicator that the campaign of HINP-PAMB for conservation and protection
of environment is effective and successful. See attached photocopy of attendance sheet,
accomplished data trash forms and photo documentations during the activity for your
reference.

III. POSTING OF TARPAULIN OUTSIDE CENRO OFFICE

Relative to the celebration, a tarpaulin was also posted in front of this Office which
serves as an Information and Education Campaign (IEC) strengthening and increasing the
awareness of everyone on the said conservation and protection effort. See attached photo
documentations for reference.
