• Total Swedish production value 5 billion SEK,

• 61 % edible crops, value of 3 billion SEK

• Vegetables constitutes 2/3 of the production value

• Berries 20 % of the production value

• Fruit 6 % of the production value

Vegetables
• The cultivated area for open ground crops are rising
steadily.
• Carrots occupy about ¼ of the total area. 91% market
share.
• Second largest crop, onions has doubled production in 10
years. 72 % market share.
• The greenhouse cultivation consists mostly of cucumber
45 % market share, tomatoes 15% market share and fresh
herbs.

Berries and fruit

• The production value of strawberries has almost dubbed in ten


yeas, volume and price. 17 000 tons/year. 71% market share.

• Raspberries is the second largest berry crop, are increasing.


500 tons/year.

• The Swedish fruit production is dominated by apples 25 000


tons/year, increased with 20 % in 10 years. 22% market share.

Swedish consumption of
fruits and vegetables

• The trend in Sweden is rising in consumption of


vegetables and fruit during many years.

• The total consumption of fresh vegetables has increased


with 31% in ten years.

• The total consumption of fruit and berries has increased


with 19%.

Consumption per capita

• The Swedish consumer eat about 60 kg fresh vegetables a


year. The most common are tomatoes, carrots, onions,
lettuce and cucumber.
• In ten years time the consumption of vegetables have
increased with 14 %.
• The most probable cause is increased income, heath
benefices, and of course that it tastes nice.
• The Swedish consumer eats about 70 kg fresh and frozen
fruit and berries a year, and add to that juice, jam and
marmalade.
• The most common fruits are bananas, citrus and apples.

Sweden is a netto importer of fruits and vegetables.
• The import of fruit has risen with 46 % since 2006.

• The import is dominated by


- bananas (Costa Rica, Ecuador)
- citrus (Spain, Marocco)
- apples and pears (Italy, The Netherlands)
- nuts (USA)

• The import of berries is rapidly rising as well as nuts and tropical fruit.

• The import of vegetables is dominated by tomatoes followed by peppers

Opportunities for consumption
increase

• The National Food Agency of Sweden recommendation is


to eat 500 g fruit and vegetables a day, and a major part
should be coarse vegetables.

• The results show that only every 10th women and every
25th man take fruit and vegetables in the recommended
amount. The proportions are fairly unchanged over time.
