MULTICULTURAL LESSON PLAN

Student: Alexandria Dean

Subject/Concepts: Math

Grade Level: 6th Grade

1. Standards:

Observable objective: Students will be able to solve real-world and mathematical problems involving

area, surface area, and volume.

Multicultural goal: Build social relationships to promote interest in differences

and include other in school and social activities.

Observable objective: Students will be able to explain how media in early U.S. history helps to create a

diverse society.

Auditory-Visual-Kinesthetic learning styles:

• Visual Learners: Lesson will include pictures and charts

• Auditory Learners: Teacher will explain notes rather than students reading off a

PowerPoint

• Kinesthetic Learners: Teacher will include movement during the lesson

Gardner's Intelligence:

• Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence: Teacher will include movement during the lesson.

2. Materials: PowerPoint, worksheet, mini quiz, pre-lesson worksheet, BrainPOP video

3. Instruction- learning Process:

Do First: Students will complete a pre-lesson worksheet to assess their prior knowledge on area.

Mini-lesson: Begin the lesson with a BrainPOP video. Then, move to the PowerPoint to guide notes and

the teacher explaining the notes being explained for the students who learn best auditory.

Guided Practice: Students will complete a worksheet based on the lesson on area (Worksheet included)

Independent Practice: Students will get up and move to find a partner to work with. Partners will draw

their names in block letters on graph paper. After that, students will leave their names on their desks and

pick another student’s name and work together to find the area of the block names. The movement will

help the students who learn best kinesthetically.

Exit Slip: Students will complete a 3-question mini quiz for the teacher to assess their knowledge (Mini

Slip Included)

5. Reflection:

a. With this lesson plan. students will learn how to find the area of a trapezoid. This is a 6th

grade standard in the state of Nevada.

b. When it comes to multicultural skills, the students will learn how to connect with their

peers, even when it comes to a subject like math where it doesn’t seem like multicultural

education is important.
c. I think there’s a lot of active learning in this lesson plan. Students have the opportunity to

talk with their peers and not be forced to sit at their desks for 90 minutes straight. I think

that students being able to move will help increase their ability to learn.

d. Strengths: Planned videos, worksheets, keys, and partner activity. Weaknesses:

PowerPoint isn’t included, class have chance of getting out of hand with so much

movement if not controlled correctly.
