What is a Lesson Plan?

A lesson plan is a teacher's plan for teaching a lesson. It can exist in the teacher's mind,
on the back of an envelope, or on one or more beautifully formatted sheets of A4 paper. Its
purpose is to outline the "programme" for a single lesson. That's why it's called a lesson plan. It
helps the teacher in both planning and executing the lesson. And it helps the students,
unbeknownst to them, by ensuring that they receive an actual lesson with a beginning, a middle
and an end, that aims to help them learn some specific thing that they didn't know at the
beginning of the lesson (or practise and make progress in that specific thing).

To summarize, and in very basic terms: a lesson plan is the teacher's guide for running a
particular lesson, and it includes the goal (what the students are supposed to learn), how the goal
will be reached (the method, procedure) and a way of measuring how well the goal was reached
(test, worksheet, homework etc).

Parts of Lesson Plan

1. Objectives- provide goals to be attained, gives direction for the class discussion, and call
for what outcomes to expect.
2. Subject Matter and its Sources- textbooks, library references, etc should be stated in
the lesson plan.
3. Materials- necessary aids to teaching and should be included in a lesson plan. Should
give a maximum benefit.
4. Behavioral Objectives-

Cognitive- learning facts and information

Psychomotor- habits and skills

Affective Objectives- attitudes and appreciation

5. Teaching aids and devices- maps, graphs, flash cards, picture, objects, slide, etc.
6. Procedure- both teacher and pupil activity in a detailed plan.
7. Assignment- insures a good recitation.

Detailed Lesson Plan

Detailed Lesson Plan (DLP) is a teacher's “roadmap” for alesson. It contains

a detailed description of the steps a teacher will take to teach a particular topic. A typical DLP
contains the following parts: Objectives, Content, Learning Resources, Procedures, Remarks and
Reflection.

Semi- detailed Lesson Plan

Semi-detailed lesson plan is less intricate than the detailed lesson plan. It is having a
general game plan of what you wanted to cover for that subject on that particular day. An
objective statement itself should answer what students will be able to do by the end of the lesson.

Brief Lesson Plan

A lesson plan provides you with a general outline of your teaching goals, learning objectives,
and means to accomplish them, and is by no means exhaustive. A productive lesson is not one in which
everything goes exactly as planned, but one in which both students and instructor learn from each other.
