ABSTRACT
The plant Andrographis paniculata is a drug identified as a source plant of Bhunimba often referred as
Kalamegha or Yavatikta mentioned in Ayurvedic literature. Bhunimba is indicated in Kushta (skin
diseases), Kandu (itching), Shopha (swelling), Yakratroga (liver diseases), Krimi (worm’s infestation),
Kushta (skin diseases), Jwara (fever). This drug having chemical constituents like Andrographolide, 14 –
deoxy – 11, 12 – didehydroandrographolide etc., in it. A. paniculata is reported to have hepatoprotective,
antiulcer, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, anti-filarial activities etc. Clinically also it has shown significant
result in viral hepatitis, elephantiasis, common cold, vitiligo and upper respiratory tract infection.

Key words: Bhunimba, Andrographolide, 14 – deoxy – 11, 12 – didehydroandrographolide.
