COOLPAVEMENT BY

WATER RETAINING PAVER BLOCK

ABSTRACT
Water retaining paver block (WRPB) is a new kind of technology arrived in the area of pavement
construction. This technique was arises as a part of advancing cool pavement technology. The
conventional pavements are not efficient in controlling urban heats. So that temperature in the
pavements is very high, and it also increases the atmospheric temperature by reflecting solar
radiance. Conventional pavement does not control surface runoff during rainy season. It will
leads to urban flooding during heavy rain. These are the main reason behind the arrival of cool
pavement. Cool pavement can be created with bitumen asphalt mixture along with water
retaining filler materials. WRPB is very useful in reducing urban runoff and flooding and it will
increase the rate of evaporation. The easier installation and maintenance of WRPB shows the
importance of such pavement in current situation. The increased urbanisation leads to the
formation of urban heat island. The use of WRPB in such area makes stable water content in the
soil and prevents the soil from direct exposure of sunlight. It increases the evaporation of water
from the soil. And it reduces the drying of soil due to lack of water.
