INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

People nowadays be it children or adult are suffering from poor eyesight. Probably too

much usage of gadgets can damage the eyes easily and will eventually turn into blindness. The

loss of one, the most important human senses causes them a lot of hardships in daily life. A lot

of instruments and smart devices are applicable for visually impaired people for navigation but

most of them have a certain problem for carrying the device and need a long term training to

use it. The need of blind for assistive devices for navigation and orientation has totally

increased. Trained dogs and white cane are the simplest and most affordable navigation and

available tools for visually impaired people. Although these tools are very popular, they cannot

provide the blind with all information and features for safe mobility.

The World Health Organization (WHO), reported that there are 285 million visually

impaired people worldwide, out of which close to 90% live in low income settings. Among

these visually impaired individuals there are 39 million who are totally blind. The traditional

white cane is a well-known companion of blind individual for many years, although being

effective, still it has a lot of disadvantages.

Third eye for blinds is an innovation which helps blind people to navigate with greater

comfort, speed and confidence, by detecting the nearby objects through the use of ultrasonic

waves to notify the user through heavy vibrations and loud beeps of buzzer. By wearing this

device, they can fully avoid the use of white cane and such other devices. This device will help

the blind to navigate without holding a stick which is a bit annoying for them. They can simply
wear it as a band or cloth and it can function very accurately and they only need a very little

training to use it.

This paper presents the implementation of an assistive belt for the blind. The basis of

this belt is a technology that helps the visually impaired in detecting any obstacles that may

appear in their path in any direction of the belt. When the user of this belt encounters an object,

it alerts the user with a loud beeping sound and heavy vibrations. The technology used in this

belt involves communications between the Arduino UNO and Ultrasonic Sensors. The main

purpose of the study is to develop a new, cheap, and more efficient way to help the visually

impaired person with greater comfort, speed and overflowing confidence and it is built a

wearable navigation system that will be able to guide a visually impaired person safely and

have the same ease and confidence as a sighted people in an indoor and outdoor environment.

Objectives of the Study

This study will seek to determine the Arduino base ultrasonic vibrator-beeping third-

eye belt for visually impaired.

1. To determine the efficiency and safeness of Arduino base ultrasonic vibrator-beeping

third-eye belt for visually impaired.

2. To determine if the Arduino base ultrasonic vibrator-beeping third-eye belt help the

visually impaired detect the obstacles.

3. To determine if there is a significant difference between the Arduino base ultrasonic

vibrator-beeping third-eye belt and traditional white cane in terms of safeness of visually

impaired.
Statement of the Problem

This research study aims to create a device that can help the visually impaired person

by detecting the obstacles that might appear in the direction of the belt with the help of Arduino

UNO and Ultrasonic sensors.

Specifically, it will answer the following questions:

Specific Problem

1. Can Arduino base ultrasonic vibrator-beeping third-eye belt efficient and safe for

visually impaired?

2. Does the third-eye belt powered by Android UNO and Ultrasonic sensors help the

visually impaired detect the obstacles?

3. Is there significant difference between the Arduino base ultrasonic vibrator-beeping

third-eye belt and traditional white cane in terms of safeness of visually impaired?

Statement of Hypotheses

Null hypothesis

1. It is not efficient and safe for visually impaired to use Arduino base ultrasonic

vibrator-beeping third-eye belt.

2. It is not feasible to help visually impaired detect obstacles through third-eye belt

powered by Android UNO and Ultrasonic sensors.

3. There is no significant difference between the Arduino base ultrasonic vibrator-

beeping third-eye belt and traditional white cane in terms of safeness of visually impaired.
Alternative hypothesis

1. It is efficient and safe for visually impaired to use Arduino base ultrasonic vibrator-

beeping third-eye belt.

2. It is feasible to help visually impaired detect obstacles through third-eye belt

powered by Android UNO and Ultrasonic sensors.

3. There is a significant difference between the Arduino base ultrasonic vibrator-

beeping third-eye belt and traditional white cane in terms of safeness of visually impaired.
