Imbibition is the absorption of water through surface tension. Diffusion is the movement of water molecules from areas of higher concentration to lower concentration. Osmosis is the movement of water molecules through a semi-permeable membrane from higher to lower concentration until concentrations are equal on both sides.     CHARACTERISTICS OF ROOT TO ABSORB WATER


     Occupy large area by roots
     Higher concentration of cell sap
     Thick cell wall

    Imbibition
    It is the phenomena by which living or living absorb water
    By surface tension.

    Diffusion
    The movement of water molecule from the region of higher
    concentration to region of lower concentration when two are in direct
    contact.

    Osmosis
    The movement of water molecule from the region of higher
    concentration to the region of lower concentration through semi
    permeable membrane.
    Water molecule move from the higher concentration of water to lower
    concentration of water.
    Movement of water depends.
    If water moves outwards it is called end osmosis.
    If the water move inside it is ex osmosis.
    The osmosis can continue till the concentration is equal on the both the
    side but in the above experiment though ther is concentration not same
    the experiment will not continue ,because of downward pressure of
    thistle funnel .
