Student Name: Logan Bateman

Date: 09/15/2019
Artifact Description: Celebrity Gossip Newspaper- Create a fictitious newspaper with articles taken from
fellow classmates in order to practice formatting and creating designs that are eye catching and work to
present a story.
What you learned: This activity was one of the most detail oriented and time consuming so far.
However, I also think it offered to of the best practice. There was a lot of formatting involved in this
activity and keeping everything looking good while learning new techniques on the fly was a challenge. I
was able to find article templates and example to help base my own newspaper on which helped
greatly. I was also challenged on a design level. Keeping my columns organized and finding the right
places to put images actually took a lot longer than I thought. However, through a bit of trial and error I
was able to find a flow which read like an actual newspaper. I do think that I got a really good handle on
formatting my project and picked up a few tricks for things like replacing images with my own which will
help a lot in future endeavors.

To meet a different grade level, I would extend the project a few more pages and have the students
work in groups of three or four on one newspaper. I would challenge students to write all the article
themselves and assign rolls for each student to fill like they were an actual newspaper company. I would
then have the different groups exchange newspapers so that they could enjoy their peer’s articles. This
would make an excellent formatting and writing activity as well as a fun craft activity for students at
higher levels

National Educational Technology Standards for Students (NETS)•S :

5a Use technology to create, adapt and personalize learning experiences that foster independent
learning and accommodate learner differences and needs.

5b Design authentic learning activities that align with content area standards and use digital tools and
resources to maximize active, deep learning.

Application of Skills Learned for the Future: In the future I could definitely use this activity in any
subject area to create a fun and engaging learning opportunity for my student. For example, in history I
could have the students write their article about historical events or perhaps have them create a
newspaper for a specific time period like the 70’s. I know I learned a lot in this activity and was able to
get a real handle on a lot of design and formatting skills which will make me a more effective educator in
the future.
