INTRODUCTION

The errors in writing is very common especially in the written work of the students.
“Error” refers to a kind of mistake that takes place for the lack of information or knowledge,
especially, in grammar. In order to write a good and understandable essay, especially in
writing an error analysis, the writer must be good in grammar and can give a critique very
easily. While analyzing the kinds of mistakes students make in written work, it is apparent
that students make common errors regarding to sentence structure.

The focus of this analysis paper is to evaluate others work in order to increase the
reader’s understanding of it. Expose the errors then give a critical judgement to correct
someone’s work. This activity is subjective based on the way how the person thinks rather
than facts. This means that the writer will evaluate, analyze and study their work.

The purpose why are we doing this analysis paper or error analysis is not because
we are degrading the opinion of the writer, we are going to give critique for the writer to
have additional knowledge about writing and give a precise information based on the
writer’s opinion to convey the readers.

Giving an analysis to such work is a bit complicated and risky. Reading one’s work,
evaluating and locating errors and giving an argument to such evaluation is a very tough
job to make. Given that the writer is expected to write his/her opinions or reactions in such
way that will contribute to the reader’s understanding, the writer must be an expert giving
such critical judgement. But in this work, the writer will give his/her very best to give a
bias free critique and to expose the errors that needed to be corrected. And, it is expected
that this study will assist the readers for more knowledge and give awareness to the errors
in writing an essay.

MAIN BODY

The essay that the writer will give a critique to is all about the mission and vision
of the Surigao del Sur State University. It tackles about how the university prepares their
student in order to compete not just in local, but also in global when it comes skills and
academic basis.

Sentence no. 1: The mission of the SDSSU explained what are the things they want to
achieved their students, Their goal, Their job, and task.

a. Critical Judgement

 Arrangement and correct usage of words.

 The redundancy of the words.
 The correct capitalization of the words.

b. Rule Reference

 Rule of Capitalization
- You only capitalize the first letter of the first of word of the
sentence or when the word is a noun.
 Rule of using Commas
- Use commas to separate words and word groups in a simple
series of three or more items.

c. Over All Discussion

As we can see in the given sentence, it is full of errors especially in its sentence
structure, capitalization, usage of verb. Wrong sentence structure may lead to
misunderstanding because error in grammar will give the sentence another meaning. In
the phrase, “their students, Their goal, Their job, and task.”, the usage of the word “their”

is redundant that makes the statement incorrect. And, the writer wishes to use the word
“their” in the sentence, the word “their” must not be in the capitalized form. Another, the
statement, “The mission of the SDSSU explained what are the things they want to
achieved their students,” is also incorrect. it must be this way. “The mission of SDSSU
explains the things they want or to acquire by their students.”

Sentence no. 2: The vision of SDSSU visualized what are the life of their students
after they graduated in their preffered courses.

a. Critical Judgement

 Proper usage of words.

 Misspelled words

b. Rule Reference

 Rule of Spelling
- Correct spelling of words
- Adding a suffix like -ed, -er or -est, the silent E is usually dropped
from the end of the root word.
 Rule in using Plurals
- If the noun ends with -f or -fe, the f is often changed to -ve before
adding the -s to form the plural version.

c. Over All Discussion

Same goes with the sentence no. 1, this sentence is also full of errors. Errors in
spelling is not tolerable in making an essay also, errors in using words may alter the
sentences meaning. Int this sentence, “what are the life of their students”, the writer used
the word “are” which implicates plural so the word “life” will become “lives” in plural form.
Another error is, “after they graduated in their preffered courses.” The word “graduated”
makes the statement complicated. The “graduation” the writer is talking about will happen

in the future, so the writer must use the term “graduate”. Lastly the word “preffered”, how
the writer spelled the word preferred is wrong. It must be double “r” instead of double “f”.

Sentence no. 3: Their future life…

a. Critical Judgement

 Multiple usage of Period

b. Rule Reference

 Use of Ellipsis

c. Over All Discussion

Obviously, this sentence is not a sentence. It is a phrase. And, there is an obvious

error in the phrase and that is the usage of period. In writing an essay, use of ellipsis is
not highly recommended. And, the statement itself is incorrect. it lacks its subject. The
statement goes like this, “Their future life…”, who’s life the writer wants to imply? The
writer must give more information for the sentence to be understandable.

Sentence no. 4: Their job is to guide their students to right pass.

a. Critical Judgement

 Lacking subject
 Misspelled word

b. Rule Reference

 Rule of Spelling

c. Over All Discussion

This sentence lacks its subject. And, there is an error regarding in using the proper
words such as in the word “pass” and the writer of the essay really meant “path” so
because of this error, the sentence has a different meaning.

CONCLUSION

Surigao del Sur State University aims to mold students to become highly
competitive individuals both locally and globally with their 21 st century skills. The
university also aims to attain food security, quality education, sustainable resource
management and to create a place for conducive.

In writing an essay or any forms of writing, errors can’t be avoided. According to

Harmer (2007), errors are the part of natural process of learning of language and learn
the crucial role for the learners to uncover the rules of target language by the feedback
they get on errors. Since, this study is focusing on the errors of the case, the writer
analyzes the errors that needed to be corrected in order to assist the writer of the case
on the needs for systematic improvement and for the readers better understanding.

In making an essay, grammar is so important. According to Jeffrey Coghill and

Stacey Magendanz (2003), The grammar of a language is the set of rules that govern its
structure. Grammar determines how words are arranged to form meaningful units. So, for
the writer to write an effective essay, the writer must first master the rules of grammar.
The writer has a knowledge but as this study shows, there is a lot of errors that is needed
to be corrected.

Lastly, effective writing varies to the thought of the whole essay also to the proper
construction of sentences in a correct manner. The writer must make his/her ideas
concise, and with that, it helps the readers to fully understand what the writer is trying to
imply.
