Item 1
Description:
Canva is a free photo editor with hundreds of free design elements and fonts. Canva allows
users on iOS and Androids to create their own designs using uploaded photos from the user’s
computer or using the preloaded templates. Designs may be shared to social media or
embedded into presentations. Users can invite others to join their team up to (999) in order to
collaborate on projects by sharing designs and folders. A free 30-day trial is available
allowing users to create unique templates, organize designs in unlimited folders, and access
over 400,000 photos and illustrations, monthly ($12.95) and annual ($119.40) memberships
are also available. Canva may be used in education by uploading a creation onto a course
group social media page, such as Facebook or Twitter to provide supplemental course
information. I used the free membership to design an infographic, using the easy to access
templates and editing tabs.
Item 2
Description:
WeVideo is a free online video editor, for iOS and Android, allowing users to create, view,
and share movies for playback anywhere. A helpful feature allows projects to be started on
one device and picked up on another. The free version allows users to upload images and
videos from their own computer to be edited and use the generated link to share the video
with others. The paid version includes graphics, background colors, overlays, and frames.
Using this tool for education would allow the user to create videos that could be embedded
into a course or also to develop a class project or report. The site provides video designs for
business, K-12 education and personal use. I used the free version of WeVideo to create a
video using their sample video clips and graphics. The dashboard is fairly easy to use, once I
became familiar with the tabs, but the free version features are limited.
Item 3
Description:
WavePad is free downloadable software that may be used by non-commercial Windows, Mac
and Android users to record and edit music, voice and other audio recordings. Audio files may
be cut, copied and pasted. WavePad works as a wav. or mp3 editor, but it also supports many
more audio and music formats. Users may record voiceovers for multimedia projects, and
restore audio files by removing unnecessary background noise. Text-to-speech feature is also
available. This free software is fairly easy to use, I downloaded a song from my computer and
was able to edit the selection to make a ringtone for my phone. WavePad would be helpful for
creating audio files to be added to a course. This software can also be used to create a course
podcast that could be easily uploaded onto a hosting site, making it readily accessible for
students.
Item 4
Description:
Windows Narrator is a built-in-read aloud application that reads text on the user’s PC screen.
The tool may be used for web pages and for documents created by the user. I used the
Windows Narrator to proofread the rough draft of this assignment and found it very useful.
The ability to hear the text being read helped me to catch word usage errors I might have
otherwise overlooked. The user is able to set the parameters to meet their needs such as
reading symbols and blank spaces on web pages and documents. Users are also capable of
scanning the text by using the up and arrow down keys. The use of this tool in education
would offer assistance to a visually impaired student by providing the ability to listen to text
on pages, requiring little interaction with the keypad. The challenge for a visually impaired
user would be the initial set up of parameters.
