Clothes Line

Duration: 10– 20 Minutes including discussion

Objective
To help energise participants during a training session

and/or

To help participants consider the importance of trust when working with other
people

Resources Needed

Each team will need:

 Clothes Line Task Sheet


 Two chairs
 Blindfold
 Length of string at least 2.5 metres long
 Business Card
 Sheet of A4 paper
 Handkerchief
 Pencil
 Rubber band
 Plastic or paper cup
 Paper clip
 Large envelope
 8 clothes pegs

You may also want to include some small prizes in your resources.

Instructions

1. Form the group into two teams or more teams.


2. Give each team a blindfold and a large envelope containing all the
other materials.
3. Ask the teams to select someone to be blindfolded and blindfold them.
4. Inform the teams that they may now open their envelopes, make sure
they know that the envelopes contains, amongst other things, the
instructions for this exercise.
5. Give them the chance to read the instructions before starting the
exercise.
6. At the end of the activity lead a discussion to discuss the challenges
the teams faced and how they coped with them.
7. Consider offering a small prize to the team to complete the task first

Clothes Line Task Sheet

Using the materials provided, instruct the person who has been blindfolded to
undertake the following:

1. Place two chairs 2 metres apart.

2. Fix a length of string to each chair to make a ‘clothes line’ about one
metre from the ground.

3. Using clothes pegs, attach the following objects to the line in the order
given:

1 Business Card
1 sheet A4 paper
1 handkerchief
1 pencil
1 rubber band
1 plastic or paper cup
1 paper clip
1 large envelope

4. You may not assist the blindfolded member of the team in any way
other than through your verbal instructions.

5. You have ten minutes to complete the task.
