Introductory Message

This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners, can continue
your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions, exercises, and
discussion are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-step as you
discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM. This will tell
you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you need to ask your facilitator or
your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the lesson. At the end of each module,
you need to answer the post-test to self-check your learning. Answer keys are provided for
each activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of this SLM.
Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and test. Read the instructions
carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the tasks in this
module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

Thank you.

Making Padded Quilted
Lesson
Products (Throw Pillow
1 Case)
This module will help you learn and develop your skills in making quilted
products. You will learn the tools and materials needed in making a quilted
throw pillow case. In this module, you will also make a project plan which is
necessary before starting a task. A defined project plan will always contribute
towards the success of the project. A poor plan will never deliver good results.

What Is It
PADDED QUILTING

The term quilting is given to the process of sewing two or more pieces of
fabric together either through stitching manually by hand, or mechanically with
a sewing machine or specialized long arm quilting system. Padded quilting uses
padding to make the material thicker or make a padded (raised) effect.

Quilting stitches are the stitches that hold these three layers of a quilt
together – the top, batting and the back. Running stitches, back stitches and
chain stitches are used in hand sewing. On a sewing machine a straight stitch
is used. Modern quilts are not always intended for use as beddings and covers,
it can may be used as wall hangings, table runners, or tablecloths.

Parts of Padded Quilting

1. Top - quilt top is the face of the quilt. It’s what you see when the quilt is faced
right side up.
2. Batting - is the “stuffing” that is in the middle of a quilt. Typically for a quilt,
this is a thin low loft that is about ¼" thick.
3. Backing - is the fabric that goes on the back of your quilt
4. Binding - is the material that goes around the outside of the quilt. It is used
to hide the raw edges of the quilt top, batting and backing materials.
5. Quilting stiches - the stitches that holds the three layers (top, batting and
backing) together. The layers must be fixed appropriately. If it is not
connected sparingly, the middle layer of batting will bunch up and be very
lumpy after a quilt is washed.

Tools in making Padded Quilted Pillow Case

• Needle- used to make fine stitches on fabrics

• Pin- used for fastening objects or material together
• Shears- a cutting implement similar or identical to a pair of scissors but
typically larger
• Tape measure- a flexible ruler used to measure size or distance
• Pencil- an implement for writing or drawing
• Ruler- used marking straight edges and parallel lines

4
Materials in making Padded Quilted Pillow Case

• Cloth- woven or felted fabric made from wool, cotton, or a similar fiber
• Foam- padding for the pillow case
• Zipper- device used for binding the edges of an opening of fabric or other
flexible material
• Thread- yarn used to combine two or more fabric pieces together in
accessories, garments, and other textile products.

STEPS IN MAKING PADDED QUILTED PILLOW CASE

Procedure:

1. Prepare 8 fabrics with various

colors or designs. Cut eight 2 ½ " x 21"
strips of fabric for the top, one 16 ½ "
x 16 ½ " pieces of backing fabric, one
16 ½ " x 16 ½ " square piece of foam
for batting, and then also two 2 ½" x
48" length of fabric binding strips for
lining.
2. Lay out the strips of fabric into 8
rows. Alternate the colors or designs
of the fabrics and sew it together.

3. Cut them across by 2 ½ ". Sew the

cut strips together into eight sections
like a chessboard design. This will be
your pillow top.

5
4. To make the batting, sew the pillow
top with the foam. Trim the excess
foam.

5. Quilt stich the top diagonally

following the squares and then do it in
the other direction to make a diamond
shaped quilting stich.

6. Attach the backing fabric.

7. To make the lining, bind the edges

using the binding strips.

8. Attach the zipper. Trim off excess

threads.
