I have chosen two Old English texts to illustrate the glories of Anglo-Saxon England.
The first is (probably) the earliest poem we have in Old English: Cædmon’s Creation Hymn
and was composed in the seventh century by (according to The Venerable Bede) an illiterate
cow-herder who used to go and hide outside when the harp was about to be passed to him,
because he could neither sing nor recite. As he thought. A man (possibly an angel) met him
outside and told him to go back into the hall and sing of the Creation of the World. And he
did.

The concluding couplet is from Cynewulf’s Crist (written in runes):
Eala Earendel engla beorhtost Hail Earendel, brightest of angels
Ofer Middangeard monnum sended. Sent over Middle-Earth to men.
Earendel is (we assume) a type of Christ, although the name is also cognate with the
Old Norse Aurvandil the Evening Star (Thor’s frozen toe, of all things) and the Old High
German name Orentil. For singers unfamiliar with Old English I have modernised the
spelling. For any word ending in -ih, just treat it as a German -ig.
The Anglo-Saxons eschewed rhyme, preferring to adorn their poetry with alliteration.
All lines have two or three words all beginning with the same sound. What little we know of
Old English music suggests that they were very far from tonally ambitious. Rather than
sticking purely to monastic chanting, I have been a little more adventurous; though the chords
are mostly minors (with majors used for emphasis) plus a few suspensions and a concluding
minor ninth to suggest the ecstatic nature of the coming of Christ, rather than something
incorrigibly Renaissance like a Tierce de Picardy. Robust, muscular melody lines seemed
appropriate here. Old English is not renowned for its subtlety; but it has beauties all its own.

Chinese poems are mostly about providing elements that you can link together to make into your
own picture, so it’s not necessary a structured sentence. The following translation is a phrase-
based translation.
村夜 (白居易)
霜草苍苍虫切切,
村南村北行人绝。
独出前门望野田,
月明荞麦花如雪。
Pronunciation of the Chinese language itself has systematic rules of tones. There are four tones in
total. In ancient Chinese poems, each line must follow very strict tone rules. Templates based on
Now imagine, if you want to write a poem, you must allocate the correct tone under this template.
Of course, there are many many templates available for you to use.
It should be noted; Chinese is a language that is based on character. Each character has one
syllable. In ancient poems, apart from the tone rules, each poem also must follow a ‘character
number’ template. It can be four lines with seven characters in each line, or four lines with five
characters in each line. If each line has a different number of characters, it must also follow the
applicable template and the poem title must start with the template name.
The specific tone rules and the number regulation of characters made all the poems recitable,
sing-able or even can be a piece dance along to. As such, these poems are essentially already
equipped with musical attributes. However, there are no historical records on how each poem was
sung in ancient times, as methods of recording music in a written way was introduced very late.
Hence this song is ‘An Imagine Tune’, to explore the tone of Chinese characters in modern music
context.
The poem was written at a time when the most commonly played instrument is the ‘Guqin’, a
seven-string instrument. With regards to pronunciation, the harmony ‘denm’ is an imitation of this
ancient string instrument. The sound ‘n’ is very brief and quickly devolves into an ‘m’ sound.
Within the modern music scale, each string of the Guqin represents one note in sol-fa system:

Jethro Clampett Jr was born and raised in Albuquerque NM. After a rudimentary
schooling at Miss Betsy’s Academy For Incorrigibles he studied music, drama, ballet and
hog-calling at the University of Nevada (Carson City). Upon graduation he obtained
employment as a glue-lifter in a felting studio. At the end of his long, happy life his proudest
boast was having drunk Kit Carson under the table with his much-feared bootleg whisky, the
recipe for which he took to his grave; though it is believed that corn syrup, potted anchovies
and goat’s cheese were among the suspicious ingredients.
Jethro greatly admired the music of Palestrina, which he imperfectly understood;
and combined this love with a vague resentment that his home town was not the state
capital. Sacramento’s first performance is believed to have occurred during a lunar eclipse in
a Navajo village, and at its conclusion the tribal police were sent for. Clampett was
unrepentant, as were his three fellow-conspirators. All were later admitted to the rank of
assistant shaman among the Hopi, on the grounds that anyone who could make such
improbably strange music was manifestly touched by the Great Spirits. Or some form of
spirits, anyway.
A visiting organist complained to Clampett that the final sixteen bars of the piece
were identical to the first sixteen. Jethro was unrepentant, claiming that anything which cut
down on rehearsal time had to be a good thing; and the performers would have adequate
opportunity to get it right the second time around.

Once upon a time there was a poem about trees. The first word was “I”. It was stored at the
root of a binary tree. The second word was “think”. It was stored in a node pointed to by the
right pointer of the “I” node. But this was a splay tree, and so the two nodes were

Performance Notes
This work needs at least one bass with a good D below the bass staff (for choirs of fewer than 30
singers). Basses who don’t have low Ds at all can hum an octave up from halfway bar 9 of An End. In
Epitaph, those without the low D can remain on the higher D in bars 17 and 18. Failing the above,
the entire work can be comfortably performed up a minor third, using a soprano instead of a mezzo
soprano soloist. (Music in the alternative key is available.)
Where singers have “wo oo”, the “wo” is a cross between “woe” and “war” (without a pronounced
“r”). The “oo” is like the French “ou” or German “u”.
