TIME
0:00 The performer enters slowly, but within the allowed time, facing the mirror. You may like to walk from a distance.
0:13 Freeze in whatever position in front of the mirror, even mid-walk. Don’t even breathe.
0:21 Arrive at the front of the mirror. Stand in pin-drop position for allowed time. Do not breathe.
0:29 Recite a haiku ecstatically, with absolute passion and lust; ironically, within the allowed time.
0:34 Return to pin-drop neutral position, still staring dead into the mirror. Do not breathe.
0:46 Suddenly erupt with heaving breaths; start to collapse to the floor, gasping towards the mirror. Then fall still.
0: 56 Remain in the same position facing the mirror, do not move or breathe.
1:02 Stand up. Remain still, neutral position. Breathing should be shallow and almost undetectable; enough to keep you alive.
1:12 Begin to fidget, scratching and occasionally groaning. This becomes more feverish as you continue.
1:19 Break into saddened sobs, clinging to the mirror’s face. Bang (with hand) silently. Against the pane.
1:52 Sigh; sagging and loudly. Still afterwards – fixated on mirror in sagged position. Do not breathe.
Start to inhale and exhale obviously, and act like a balloon; inflating. Do this until in a tight board-like position; eyes wide and
2:03
strained.
2:16 Reach maximum strain, holding the last breath; capacity is full.
2:23 Exhale, with raspberry-lips. Then a single sigh.
Say another haiku, morbidly; this may be in a different language if one desires. Still and silent after in same position. Be
2:31
meticulous about accent and pronunciation.
2:45 Shuffle in a circle again, in the same slumped position. No expression.
Take your instrument or prepare your voice as quickly and quietly as possible. You may wish to sing/play a single note, please do
3:00
so quickly. When doing so, turn away from the mirror.
3:07 Face the mirror. Stand still in position with the mirror. Inhale before next section.
3:12 A quick flurry of notes, no more than 5. Include microtones and multiphonics where you see fit (if possible).
3:15 Still. Gradually lower your instrument. Wait patiently. Lift it fast, prepare quickly.
A very fast collection of feathered rhythms; very high consecutive pitches. No more than perhaps 13 or so. Avoid microtones, but
3:19
multiple pitches are acceptable.
3:23 Look into the mirror, prepared for the next note, except it never arrives. Look deep into the mirror.
3:28 Return to Neutral position. Place you instrument down before doing so.
3:30 Limber up. Do some stretches. Breathe well. Jog on the spot etc…
3:39 Exhale deeply. Then fall still. Do not breathe at all. Neutral always.
3:45 Take up your instrument. Limber it up, without playing any pitch – i.e no warm-up pitches or tuning. Just make pitch-less sounds.
Begin a note, reasonably without forcing. mp – mf maximum. Gradually break into a diffuse sound – heavy strokes, multiphonics,
3:58
growling, fluttering etc… Crescendo begins gradually and increases with intensity.
Break into tremolo, fast jaunty patterns, gurgling tones – in relation to the previous note/sound your made. Begin to face the
4:03
audience. Crescendo manically!
Throw a fit; and a cacophonic one at that! Make it aggressive, stamp your feet, screechy sounds…! Collapse towards the ground.
4:06
Circular Breathe if you can, or only take one breathe amongst it – end when your capacity is spent.
Suddenly fall still. Allow the space to capture the resonance of your tantrum. Remain still, on the floor, eyes closed. Do not breathe
4:11
YET.
4:19 Begin to play a very high, but soft sound. Gradually introduce a tremolo, vibrato, suddenly attacks (sf), make it tasteful.
Begin to descend in pitch faster and faster, opening your eyes and rising to a standing position. Crescendo at first gradually, then
4:21
more aggressively as you reach the lower pitches.
Reach the lowest pitch your can comfortably play/sing loudly and passionately. Tremolo or fluctuate between different pitches,
4:29
allow it to spiral out of control.
4:35 Reach a screechingly high pitch – out of control with expression. Gradually turn it into a vocalised growl at the mirror.
4:40 Stand still with the grimace of anger on your face – looking back at yourself intensely. Stand still – Do not breathe.
4:50 Place your instrument down, and gradually return to neutral position. Breathe shallowly – enough to keep you alive.
4:59 Stop breathing – stand completely still. Still looking into the mirror.
5:05 Shuffle in a circle – only 180° to face away from the mirror. Breathe shallowly during this.
5:18 Shuffle close to the mirror. Lean forward slowly and place your forehead on it. Close your eyes and meditate for the time allowed.
