Please make a serious attempt to answer these questions before coming to discussion. We will guide
you through the questions and help facilitate discussion. Attendance and active participation at
discussions is expected. Upload the completed quiz in a Canvas assignment scheduled for each week by
1:00 pm on Monday.

Part A. Recognition of Molecules

Circle all functional groups present in each molecule and predict the solubility of the molecule in an
organic/non-polar solvent (fully soluble, partially soluble, fully insoluble, partially insoluble).
Part B. Condensation Synthesis

1) Draw two monosaccharides and show how a disaccharide is created. Make a specific covalent
bond through condensation synthesis and label the bond.

2) Draw any two amino acids and show how a dipeptide is created. Make a specific covalent bond
through condensation synthesis and label the bond.

3) Draw a condensation synthesis reaction between a glycerol and a monounsaturated fatty acid
and label the bond created.
Part C: You consume a greasy cheeseburger that contains a bun, beef patty, cheddar cheese, and mayo.
List each part of the cheeseburger according to its belonging macromolecule (Carbs, Lipids, Proteins, or
Nucleic Acids). Within each macromolecule, also state the types of bonds and/or structures are present in
each one. You are advised to use your course guide to facilitate your learning. Listed below are words
you may include in each respective macromolecule.

RNA, monosaccharide, fatty acids, cellulose, glycerol, ester bond, nucleotide, amino acid,
disaccharide, peptide bond, polypeptide, DNA, phosphodiester bond, a-1, 4 glycosidic bond,
sucrose, triglyceride, -1, 4 glycosidic bond, starch, H-bond, ionic bond, primary structure, double
helix, secondary structure, alpha helix, unsaturated fatty acid, glycerol, beta- pleated sheet,
storage, structural, tertiary structure, quaternary structure, disulfide bond, lactose, saturated fatty
acid, carotenoid, enzyme, steroid, chitin, genetic material, cell wall and polysaccharide.
