DEDICATION
We dedicate this work to Almighty God for His guidance and support throughout our stay in this

school. We also dedicate it to our parents and siblings, husbands and wife and all those who

supported us in diverse ways to make this work a success.

ABSTARCT
The study was carried out at the Dakpema junior high school in Tamale metropolis to observe

how the behavior and role of the various stake holders in the school contributes to and affects

teaching and learning. This includes both teachers and students, school authorities such as head Commented [S4]: Check and do the correction here.

teacher and parents and teachers association (PTA) and the school environment and

infrastructure. Some of the parameters that were measured included school infrastructure and

environment, school customs, ethics and prospects, head teacher-staff relationship, level of PTA

engagement in the school, attendance and punctuality to school, lesson preparation in school etc.

The findings brought to light the trend that has resulted in the poor performance of the students

over the years. Even though the school has a well-equipped staff, they are poorly motivated to

create a positive learning atmosphere for students which will transform into good results. Also,

majority of the teachers prepare their lesson notes alright but fail to honor their lessons. This has

made it difficult to complete their scheme of work on time within the term. This behavior has

affected the performance of students as they are unable to complete the teaching syllabus within

the academic year.

Furthermore, students’ absenteeism is one of the major causes of poor performance of students.

Pupils absenteeism in Dakpema junior high school is usually associated with parents work such Commented [S5]: House chores, and child labor such as petty

influence and the environment in which the students finds his/herself.
