1.1INTRODUCTION
The teaching practice period is very important to each student teacher for preparing to became
profession teacher in a future, this teaching practice helps the student teacher to be familiar with the
necessities of our profession career. Teaching is a field that requires a lot of knowledge and enough
capacity to change the society especially the learners .It should have different types of skills that are
necessary to give knowledge to their learners .And also it should aimed at changing the understanding
capacity of learners from one to another. My school internship school took place at GS NYABISINDU in
S1 A. It was processing well and the learner wanted to be stay with them in all the time of teaching both
Mathematics, but unfortunately it was internship, it wouldn’t be possible because they learned other
lessons so all lesson goes well and clear evidence of this was shown due to the performing of the
different quizzes and third term examinations, they participated perfectly, and especially during the
exams they succeeded Mathematics at a high standard level compared another subject.

1.2. OBJECTIVES OF INTERNSHIP

As the future teachers, UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY AND ARTS OF

INTERNSHIP ACTIVITIES

2.1 PLANING AND TEACHING

2.1.1 PLANNING

During my lesson planning, I worked closely with my mentor. A bout I prepared teaching aids
there was no problems because the school helped me to get some papers for drawings and
same teaching and learning material which are appropriate to the lessons which I want to teach
for that a moment in effective way. During my school practice I taught more interesting lesson
in different units, the unity which I enjoyed most is SOLIDS the reason for that is availability of
teaching and learning materials of this unit and how it’s lessons are related to real life of the
learners that leads them to become more interested and participate in that unit the evidence
for that, learners perform well in assessment.
I have gotten 7 important experienced for that unit
 To follow all steps in the lesson plan
 To join the objectives and evaluation
 To manage the time
 To use the new lesson plan
 To do self-evaluations according to the lesson plan
 Provision of questions and answers
 Asking learner based on their gender equality
 To manage class.

2.1.2 TEACHING

Getting in touch with G.S Nyabisindu community

2.1.3. Getting in touch with the school administrative staff

I was warmly welcomed by School head teacher, Director of study in collaboration with his staff
members and they advised me in whatever In accordingly.

7
2.1.4. Getting in touch with the school teachers

I met with different teachers to welcome me then I introduced to them and my ambition of
being there. Within this period of time I could clarify that I have met a good and kindly
teachers.

2.1.5. Getting in touch with my school subject teachers

After being welcomed by Dean of Study, he directed me to the subject and show me the
classes where I will be teaching as part of doing internship. I took up one week to observe
teachers’ activities as well as students to be experienced to the situation and field of work.

2.1.6. Getting in touch with my students

I visited class of senior one A made by 54 learners that I will teach mathematics. I introduced myself to
learners and tell them the subjects we are going to learn together. Then I prepared scheme of work,
lesson plan, attendance list, marks document, summary notebook, evaluation notebook, class diary and
time table to get ready to my teaching.

The first day of my teaching, it was very difficult to adjust to the time and to Class management
than how I was expecting it. Because students ‘discipline was tough issues to deal but finally I
realize it and handle it in peaceful ways, I started with revision of the previous lesson, from
known to unknown, I used participatory method and after in my teaching I used different
methods include Group discussion, question-answer method, Brainstorming, class discussion,
guided discovery and other methods.

I delivered the lesson well because all the mentor gave me sufficient time to teach, and also,
they advised me where I was done mistake, knowing that a man who never made the mistake
never tries anything new, once I committed the mistakes the mentor helped me so that I would
improve for tomorrow. The problems that I countered during my internship there is some

8
learners who does not understand well English as medium of instruction. I used to mix
language with gestures in order to clarify the meaning and helping all learners to access lessons
how to write the English and other things else, it was very hard to help them.
We have 3 classes in the secondary, two classes for senior one and one class for senior two. The
overall learners in both 3 classes are 98.
72 in all of senior one and 26 in senior two. Each senior one class was around thirty-six
students. In general, all lessons that I delivered in Ordinary level which was Mathematics and
ICT was very tremendously successfully understood in all senior one class.
I have gained Different many lessons during my internship:
 How to manage the classroom?
 To use the voice (speaks loudly during teaching session)
 Effective use of teaching aids
 How to control reaction before learners’ behaviors?
 Effectively planning of lesson.
 Effectively communication
 Self-esteem and communication skills.
 Sociability among people.
 Goals achievement and timing aspect.
 Use different techniques during teaching and learning aspect.
 Provision the special support to the learners with different disabilities and how to help
them based on their different needs.
 Successfully practice my teaching skills in a real classroom setting;

 Get acquainted with the school teaching staff (teachers) and learn from them;

 Get knowledge and experiences for different educational document

 Educate learners of different personalities (individual differences)

 Do many related teaching and learning activities in different basic educational institutions;

 Suggested solutions then solve different problems face in education of secondary schools

 Fulfill different teacher’s responsibilities in expected subject and extra curriculum;

 Collaborate and operate to different persons of different culture and learn from them different
experiences;

9
 Communicate to different people for effective communication in teaching and learning issues;

 Practice and internalize different teaching and learning methods with learning and examining
others from different teachers for strengthening good education for future citizens.
 Help and participate in different innovations in educational systems;

 Increase professional knowledge in teaching and learning activities of daily life,

 Think and suggest solutions about different problems face in basic education;

3. PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED AND SOLUTIONS

3.1 PROBLEM AND SOLUTIONS RELATED TO TEACHING AND LEARNING

EVENTS

The problems that I faced in my internship are the these: school has few teaching aids, learners
in class who doesn’t know how to write and to read the English, lesson plan, time management
and poor research on lessons, class management.
They have few teaching aids like manila papers, and other teaching aids. The solutions I tried to
use to flash cards, and improvised teaching and learning materials which are available around
school environment in order to help learners to understand the lesson.
The learners who have pure communication in English as language in which all subject taught, I
helped them by using more teaching and learning materials in order to support them to
understand Mathematical concepts. And for those one who are slowly I used to put them in
group work with more knowledgeable learners, indeed I used to give them more practical
exercises and home work in order to strengthen their Mathematical knowledge.
About the time management of the class, I before of starting, I started lessons by telling them
objective of the lesson and asking them to keep it so that we could not go far from daily
objectives, and also once any disturbance emerged in classroom I respond by telling those one
who are making disorder to keep quiet and otherwise they should be punished by regulation
which was agreed between me and learners before I staring my internship and those rules are
hanged on classroom wall. Also I have done this for searching how teaching and learning should
be well, we have sometimes used internet to search and use groups to share what is available

10
About the students who came late at school, we have tried to encourage them to come early
with showing to them the importance of starting lesson with teacher.

About student who make noise in classroom, I tried to give the advice to student about how
they must have a good behavior when I am teaching, without making noise in order to have
better communication among them and to understand well what I am teaching them.

Also I used to move around class during teaching in order to reduce students who should
Couse any disturbance and being absent minded in lesson.
Now how classroom management was,
The class management was not easy due to problem of over population in class, and the desks
were few compared to number of student, on average of 54 students in a class with 18 desks
which means that there are 3 learners per 1 desk. After facing with this challenge, I tried to do
the following to overcame that problem: I used a competitions of silence rows (range) I gave
them instructions to follow and I gave them mark and reward to those who have good marks, I
positive reinforcement (motivation) for those who show good behavior, establishing rules and
regulation and hanging them on wall and being good communicator by speaking loud and
facing learner while I was teaching.
About research, it was not easy for me because they have few and poor books but I tried to use
them and my mentors helped where I was not understanding well and give me advice where it
was necessary.

3.2. PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS RELATED TO THE SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION

AND MANAGEMENT

For me I would like to say that I did not face with any problem with the school administration
because I followed their instructions, I attend their meeting, in every school activity I
participated. I thank them so much because they did not complicate me and helped me in
searching of papers of fabricating the teaching aids and giving me technical support and
material support.
3.3. Overall evaluation of internship exercises

Internship at GS NYABISINDU was great opportunity for me to learn real –word teaching
experiences.

11
This program of internship was excellent to me because it helped me to improve my teaching
skills and create big self- experience .I learned to live with all learners with different behaviors ,I
learnt how to make connections new lesson with prior knowledge ,I learnt how to appreciate
learners by using negative and positive reinforcement, I learnt how I can improve learner’s
confidence and competence by using debate .i knew how to assess and group works ,I learnt to
adopt myself to different learners with different disabilities ,to use all teaching materials like
scheme work, attendance list,…
In this internship I had got benefit because now day I can adopt myself in different conditions of
life like to be a teacher.
The school has a good organization in studying where they have a test monthly and also I
participate in doing corrections.
On mentoring I was mentored in each lesson by the teacher of each lesson and after they gave
me some remarks to correct me.
About the regulation I was ordered to be present On Monday and Friday and I respect the time
I given as it is indicated on time table which is annexed on this report.
I thank the supervisor from school called ABAYISENGA Dorcas who came to visit me and gave
some remarks to correct.

4. RECOMMENDATIONS
4.1. ADVICE FOR THE NEXT YEAR’S INTERNSHIP STUDENTS –TEACHERS
I realize that an internship and teaching at GS NYABISINDU was not easy, I would like to make a
suggestion and recommendation to the next year’s internship students: these are follow
 The student –teacher should read the rules, polices, and internal regulations of the
school before they start internship.
 The student –teacher have to talk to the school administrations about regulation,
dressing and school organizations before they start the internship
 They must cooperate with the staff (teachers of the school)
 They must follow all school duties, rules and instructions of the school in order to avoid
conflict or problem with the school administrations.
 They must obey their mentors, if your mentor asks you any favor you have to do it.
 Student –teacher must have commitment in their internship.
 They must be sociable with learners.
 They must participate in school activities, meeting.
 They should participate in all school activities and corroborate with school staff and
members within the same goal.

12
 The student teachers should provide enough teaching aids which will facilitate them in
their internship during teaching and learning process.

.2 RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

4

The following are opinions about the internship program and how I thinks the program
can be improved:
 I think student –teacher should be given more training about internship exercises before
they are sent in school.
 Supervisor from University with students who will be supervised by him/her, should
have WhatsApp group through which daily information should be given.
 University should call school administrator of where internship is being carried out at
least one in week to follow up student behavior of student teacher.
 After submitting internship report at university, student should be given time to share
Experience they have gained to their class mate, this will strengthen professional.
 The superior I mean HEC (high educational council) have to send every new about
internship before starting in order to get time to read them.
 Those superior must train teachers and head teachers about the internship.
 The superior must prepare the documents reserved for school concerned the internship.
 It should be better if school based mentor given some motivation by university in order
to increase support and help they offer to student teacher.

4.3 RECOMMENDATIONS FOR GS NYABISINDU

 The school authorities may help the interns to get all possible pedagogical
document.
 The school should arrange some kind of reinforcement to interns because the
time of working is difficult to find accommodation.
 The school should give some rewards to the first learners in all classes in order to
increase motivation in teaching and learning process.
 The school should provide manipulation tools to facilitate any one with special
needs education.
 The school should increase mass media as well as internet to allow learners to
have access to the reliable information.

13
 School should have a collective sport, playground, which engage all learners to
be involved in sport activities to improve their lives
 The school may increase the equipment of laboratory to facilitates all learners
especially sciences.
 The school should find enough desks to help all learners sitting comfortable.
 School should find how it can solve problem of over population.

4.4 CONCLUSION

All in all I would like to thank UTAB which organized this internship of the whole term
which helped us to improve our skills ,knowledge and get experienced on teaching and
I appreciated the school which received us and gave us time ,opportunity to practice
what we learnt theoretically.

I also I thank our school UTAB which comes to supervise us in our different provinces
