THE FOLLOWING PARAGRAPH NUMBERS REFER TO API-672, THIRD EDITION, SEPTEMBER 1996
WHICH IS A PART OF THIS PRACTICE
SECTION 1 - GENERAL
I 1.1 SCOPE
a. (Exception) This practice covers packaged, integrally geared centrifugal air compressors
designed for operation in utility and instrument air service.
b. All specifications in this practice are additions to those of API-672 unless specifically noted as
exceptions. Paragraph numbers in this practice which do not appear in API-672 are new
paragraphs.
c. An asterisk () indicates that a decision by the Purchaser is required or that additional
information is furnished by the Purchaser.
Note: A bullet () is shown in API-672 indicating that a Purchaser's decision is required.
d. Vendor Qualification. Centrifugal compressor packages shall be supplied by vendors
qualified by experience in manufacturing the units proposed. To qualify, the vendor must
have manufactured at the proposed point of manufacture, at least two air compressor packages
of comparable speed, power rating, and discharge pressure, including the proposed control
system. Each of these compressor packages must have been in service for at least one year
and be performing satisfactorily.
e. Where the vendor qualification requirement of Par. 1.1d prevents the application of the latest
technology, the vendor shall submit to the Purchaser a second alternative proposal
incorporating such features for review and approval by the Owner's Engineer. The proposal
shall specifically identify the undemonstrated features and state their advantages.
f. Centrifugal compressors manufactured under a license agreement shall carry the licensor’s
written guarantee.
I 1.5 REFERENCED PUBLICATIONS
a. Table 1 lists the practices and standard which shall be used in this practice.
b. Table 2 lists the practices and standard which shall be used with this practice as specified by
the Purchaser.

2.2.9 LUBRICATION
I 2.2.9.2 c. Driver bearings shall be supplied from the pressurized oil system.
R,O 2.2.9.5.2 a. For compressor equipped with shaft driven main oil pumps, the motor standby pump driver
shall not shut down automatically when the shaft driven pump delivers sufficient pressure. The
system shall be designed to permit on line testing of the standby pump for operability.
b. For compressor equipped with motor and turbine driven pumps, a selector switch shall be
provided to permit either to be used as standby.
c. Turbines used as drivers for standby pumps shall be furnished with a governor.
I 2.2.9.5.5 Oil cooler materials for salt or brackish water cooling shall be per Par. 3.6.3.
O 2.2.9.5.10 The system shall include a bladder type accumulator if one is required to maintain sufficient oil
pressure while the standby pump accelerates from idle condition to full speed.
R 2.2.9.5.11 A purifier (centrifugal or vacuum type, as specified) for removal of water from the lube oil shall be
provided for systems serving steam turbine driven compressors. The purifier shall be permanently
connected to the reservoir, suitable for outdoor installation and shall be furnished complete with
accessory equipment to take oil from and return oil to the reservoir at equal flow rates.
A protective device shall be included to prevent loss of oil via the cleanup system.
Purifier capacity shall be at least one percent of the normal flow rate through the reservoir.
2.2.10 MATERIALS
I 2.2.10.5 LOW TEMPERATURE
Impact requirements shall be per IP 18-10-1 for the specified Critical Exposure Temperature (CET).
SECTION 3 - ACCESSORIES
3.1 DRIVERS
I 3.1.2 The compressor and driver shall be suitable for automatic unattended startup.
I 3.1.4 If a motor is specified for the main driver it shall be per IP 16-9-1 and IP 16-9-2 as applicable.
Motors used as auxiliary drivers shall be per IP 16-9-1.
I 3.1.7 (Exception) Unless otherwise specified, steam turbine drivers shall conform to IP 10-7-1.
I 3.1.10 (Exception) Unless otherwise specified, external gears shall conform to IP 10-10-2.
3.2 COUPLING AND GUARDS
R,M 3.2.1.1 a. Coupling shall be of the flexible element (laminated disc or diaphragm) type.
b. AISI 4100 and 4300 Series flexible elements shall be suitably coated for corrosion
resistance.
c. Alternative coupling designs may be proposed when required to increase system torsional
damping. Such proposals shall be submitted to Purchaser for approval by Owner's Engineer.
3.4 CONTROLS AND INSTRUMENTATION
3.4.2 CONTROL SYSTEMS
O 3.4.2.2 Dual or spare compressors shall be suitable for parallel operation.
R 3.4.2.9 Automatic loading of the compressor by opening the suction throttle and discharge blowoff valves
shall be provided for all shutdown modes of steam turbine driven compressors.
3.4.3 INSTRUMENT AND CONTROL PANELS
O 3.4.3.1 o. Ammeter for electric motor driven units.
p. Air flow indicator
q. Tachometer for turbine driven units
r. Compressor and driver bearing temperature indication
3.4.4 INSTRUMENTATION
3.4.4.1 TEMPERATURE GAUGES
O,R 3.4.4.1.3 Temperature gauges shall be provided at the inlet and discharge of each compressor stage.
