Brahmin Street
Brahmin Street
BRAHMIN STREET:
The Brahmins working in the Durga temple resided in this
area after 10th century. So that’s how it became agraharam for
Brahmins. Due to various factors the Brahmins shifted from the
Brahmin Street.
The second half has an old Shivalayam which is 100 years old so the
surrounding spaces are influenced because of the temple.
Street encroachment: On top of the site being narrow in the first place, during day time vendors are
encroaching the streets in front of their shops a bit to put up their displays and it’s making the
streets narrower and throwing traffic off axis.
Safety issues: After six in the evening the Brahmin Street till
Kothapeta junction is not safe due to thief’s and robbers, so the crime
rate increased.
Drainage: On the daily basis the drainages are hardly sufficient but
during rainy season the drainage overflow which also degrades the
sanitation and hygiene of the street.
Cultural impact on the streets: There is lot of history on the streets with respect to site, which lost
its significance due to long period of time.
Bus stop removal: Due to the construction of flyover, a bus stop was removed which was present
right at the entrance of Brahmin street because of that, float has been reduced due to harder
transit.
Methodology:
Proposals:
1. Way finding.
2. Street interventions.
3. Public toilets.
4. Interactive spaces.
Temples
Old Shivalayam
CONCEPTUAL IDEAS:
1.Way finding: Signage’s that guide people through a physical environment and enhance their
understanding and experience of the space are missing in certain important spaces in the site.
Directionality to the Old Shivalayam temple is not maintained, it is difficult to the pilgrims to visit the
temple. So by using this traditional rangoli patterns as shown in the above image the directionality is
shown through this signage. Mosaic tile art can be used as one of the mediums which is durable for a
long time.
2.Street interventions: Due to the cultural significance of three streets in the site which is ignored
we wanted to revive the cultural importance of the street by facade treatment using Vibrant colours
and paintings explaining history, by adding murals and street lights.
3.Public toilets: Due to lack of public toilets in the site the people are littering in the streets because
of which the sanitation and hygiene in the site is poor. So the apt site is proposed for public toilets.
4. Interactive spaces:
There is complete absence of open spaces in the area for community activities and such. This
provides no opportunity for retreat and leaves no buffer for the spillover of functions. We proposed
two sites for open spaces which act as interactive spaces.
Site – 1:
This building is used for anadhanam before forty years when Brahmins stayed in Brahmin street now
this building is neglected. So we proposed to demolish the building, and create sitout spaces for
interaction, play area for kids.
Site – 2:
This building is having an open unused space in the front, so we proposed to utilize the space for
preaching, due to presence of Brahmin houses in the street behind this space.
5.Redeveloping a modular site: The selection of site was based on the hierarchy of the heights of
the building and the main purpose of redevelopment of the site was to improve to the open spaces
and to improve accessiblility to the buildings in case of emergency by rearranging the G and G+1
buildings and maintaining the visual access to the Indrakeeladri hill at the same time.
