SHIPS MOTIONS

1. Due to the influences of winds and sea, the vessel can make three different
ROTATING motions and three different LINEAR motions.
2. When her starboard and port sides rise and fall with the waves, the vessel is
ROLLING
3. When her stem and stern rise and fall with the waves, the vessel is PITCHING
4. When her bow is pushed to starboard and then to port, the vessel is YAWING
5. When the whole ship rises and falls back into a trough, she is HEAVING
6. When the ship is pushed forward by the waves and sinks back into a trough, she is
SURGING
7. When the whole ships moves bodily to starboard and then to port, she is
SWAYING

TIDES

8. SPRING TIDES every other week the sun and moon are both in line with the
earth, the two gravitational forces added together will cause exceptionally strong
tides
9. NEAP TIDES when the sun and the moon are at 90 degrees of each other, the
gravitational force of the sun will neutralize half of the moon’s gravitational force,
resulting in neap tides
10. HIGH SLACK WATER (HSW) is when the high water is highest and about to go
down
11. LOW SLACK WATER (LSW) is the tide when the low water is lowest and about
to go up

15. What equipments that must regularly be checked and tested ? FIRE
PREVENTION, FIRE DETECTION, and FIRE FIGHTING
16. If you can not extinguish the fire on your own in two minutes, you must : (a).
Raise the fire alarm (all passengers and crew and if necessary, shore based
stations and vessels in the vicinity, must be alerted) (b). Try to control the fire (c).
Find out what is burning by the colour and odour of the smoke (d). Take
precautions against toxic smoke, (wind from abeam will reduce risk of
suffocation) (e). Check the cargo plan for any dangerous goods
17. FIRE FIGHTING ACTIONS : (a). Shut off any ventilation (b). Shut off any
ignition source (c). Close all the fire-retarding doors (d). Start the fire
extinguishing pumps (e). Extinguish the fire (g) Keep adjacent spaces wet (h).

ABANDONED
19. ROLL CALL : At the assembly station (muster station) all the names of the
persons on board must be called out to see if anyone is missing

Call out “MAN (OR WOMEN) OVER BOARD” (b). Throw a lifebuoy into the
water (c). Keep your eyes on the person in the water (d). Indicate to others the
person’s position

chemical or carbon dioxide (CO2) (b). Massive or advanced fire : Use water
spray, hose spray or monitor-nozzles to cool the area, evacuate the area
24. EMERGENCY RESPONSE IN CASE OF EXPOSRE TO DANGEROUS
GOODS : *Call a physician and practice first aid : (a). carefully remove
contaminated clothes (b). Eyes : flush with luke-warm, low pressure running
water for at least 15 minutes (c). Skin : in case of frost-bite, thaw frosted parts (d).
Inhalation : remove patient into fresh air, give oxygen or artificial respiration (e)
Ingestion : with certain chemicals patients are not allowed to vomit
25. ORANGE COLOURED LABELS : Indicate dangerous goods that must be
separated from FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS by an intermediate space or on deck by
at least 12 metres
26. RED COLOURED LABELS : Indicate dangerous goods that must be separated
from FLAMMABLE SOLIDS, SPONTANEOUSLY COMBUSTIBLE AGENTS
or agents that are DANGEROUS WHEN WET by a longitudinal intermediate
space or on deck by at least 24 metres
27. GREEN COLOURED LABELS : Indicate dangerous goods that must be stored at
a safe distance from EXPLOSIVE GOODS
28. YELLOW COLOURED LABELS : Indicate dangerous goods that may not be
stored near FLAMMABLE GAS, NON-FLAMMABLE COMPRESSED GAS or
TOXIC GAS
29. BERTHING : Ships are made fast to bollards by HEADLINES, STERNLINES,
BREASTLINES and SPRINGS
30. To prevent the HAWSER or SPRING from being fouled, the line is led through a
