CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Oregano or what we also known as kalabo a herb that has been cultivated for

centuries in the Mediterranean region, although now it can be found in most continents.

The name oregano translate roughly into mountain joy, which explains in parts its

association in ancient Greeks and Romans with joy and happiness. Oregano are rich in

thymol, carvacol, and peymene which these variables are important in controlling insects

such as mosquito. Oregano is known to be included in any cuisine for it can add a flavor

to any chosen foods and people also knew that oregano can be a medicine, it can be use

in treating skin sores, to relieve muscle ache and as an anti-septic and also treating

coughs, cramping, diarrhea, and digestion. Few people only know that oregano is also an

anti-repellent base on the website malariaworld.org.

Months ago, many places suffered from the calamity brought by the mosquitos.

Many places declared state of calamity because of mosquito epidemic. Many are being

challenged specially the Department of Health (DOH) on how to kill and prevent

mosquitos. Because of eagerness, a lot of people tried and looked for mosquito killer that

would help them save money and solve their problem regarding this mosquito epidemic.

Oregano has been one of the remedies that can prevent and kill mosquito. It is said that

is very effective because mosquito hates the smell of oregano. While on the other hand,

candle has been an effective mosquito repellant. According to (Deziel, 2019) Oregano

has a substance thymol which is 100 percent effective repellent against anopheles
quadrimaculatus, a species of mosquito that carries malaria, and base to the annual

report of Department of Health (DOH) 8,160 were reported in the country and only 32

provinces were malaria free.

Researchers got this idea from a research conducted by (Carpio, March 3, 2014)

a candle as a mosquito repellant , an ignitable wick embedded in wax, or another

flammable solid substance such as tallow, that provides light and in some cases a

fragrance. A lot of people uses candles for households, for it provides light and sometimes

used it to get rid of flies, also many households used it as an alternative for market floor

polish because it is a good polish and it can rid mosquitos by its oregano fragrance. Even

though oregano is generally recognize safe (Deziel, 2019), the researcher still

recommend to change your repellant method if any allergy occurred.

The researchers decided to combine the oregano oil and wax to be formed as a

scented wax or polish. For being used as a material that can shine floor, and at the same

time get rid of mosquitoes because of its oregano scent, a dual purpose material. The

purpose of combining the oregano and wax is to make a floor wax or a floor polisher that

is an anti- repellant that could help people prevent and get rid of the mosquitos. Oregano

scent lasts when it is dry, so before mixing it with wax, oregano must be dried accordingly

to have an appropriate long last scent for 10-14 days (design, 2009-2019), so that you

can polish your floor twice or thrice a month.

The anti-mosquito floor polish will give a big impact in today’s society because it

is not only a big help for preventing mosquitos but this product is organic, no side

effects and cannot create pollution.

Objectives of the Study

The researchers generally aims to produce floor polish with oregano scent in controlling

mosquito.

Specifically this study aims to:

1. To determine the measurement of the wax and the oregano extract to be made

into a mosquito repellant floor polish.

2. To determine if the oregano extract is effective enough to be made into a

mosquito repellant.

3. Is there a significant difference between the commercial mosquito repelling

products and the oregano mosquito repellant floor polish in terms of:

3.1 Odor

3.2 Duration

3.3 Effectiveness

Hypothesis

There is no significant difference between the commercial candle mosquito

repelling product and the oregano extract mosquito repelling floor polish.
Significance of the Study

The main target to promote this product is some of the public schools.

This study will be perceived to have a great contribution and value to the following:

Students. Wherein students spent most of their time in their schools knowing that

mosquitos are aggressive during daytime.

Consumers. Having this product is not a problem in terms of financial issues, this

mosquito repellent is affordable, it’s no harm and easy to use.

Future Researchers. This study will serve as a guide for developing of the future related

study.

Scope and Delimitation

This study focuses about getting rid of mosquitos and a great floor polish in a

public school where students always clean and wax their classroom every after class.

Definition of Terms

To clarify the words being used, the following shows the terms being discussed

in this study.

Oregano. Which we also known as kalabo a herb that navalenos known as one of a

herb than can cure cough.

Floor Polish. A material that will be use as a polish that can shine floor, made by wax.

Chapter II
Methodology
Materials and Methods for Objective 1: To determine the measurement of the wax and

the oregano extract to be made into a mosquito repellant floor polish.

1) In making the oragano extract researchers will prepare 8kgs of oregano and blend it to get the

(60ml) extract to be mixed with the wax and while the wax is melting this extract should be added for it

to be mixed well and to have an oregano scent.

2)Testing any amounts of wax and oregano to be created as a floor polish and to find the right

measurement for a mosquito repellant floor polish. Researcher will try to follow Carpio's study,

researcher will have 1kg of wax and 60 ml oregano extract to make a mosquito repellent floor polish.

Researcher will melt the wax to be mixed with the oregano extract between 122° and 140° F (50°- 60°C),

it must be melted slowly. Put it together with a double boiler, It's important to use a double boiler

because you need to seperate the intense heat of the hot pan and the wax. A double boiler allows water

to boil, and the steam from that then heats the bowl of wax.

Materials and Methods for Objective 2: To determine if the oregano extract is effective

enough to be made into a mosquito repellant.

1) Researcher will wear patholder to prevent burn in drying the hot melted wax which

has the oregano extract with it into an old 30ml can using a funnel to avoid waste and

leave it until it dries efficiently.

Materials and Methods for Objective 3.1: Is there a significant difference between the

commercial mosquito repelling products and the oregano mosquito repellant floor polish

in terms of Odor.

The blended dried oregano leaves extract will be mixed to a 1 kg melted wax to be able

to acheive the concentrated odor which will fight the mosquitos. The blended 60ml

oregano extract that is effective enough to have a strong odor even if it is mixed with

1kg melted wax.

Materials and Methods for Objective 3.2: Is there a significant difference between the

commercial mosquito repelling products and the oregano mosquito repellant floor polish

in terms of Duration.

The oregano is said to be more effective if the oregano leaves has been dried according to (design 2009-
2019) the dried oregano scent would last for up to 10-14 days. The dried oregano extract will be mixed
to a 1kg melted wax. Therefore, mthe mosquito repellant oregano scented floor polish will last up to 10-
14 days given that the researchers oregano extract is more concentrated than the others oregano
extract.
Materials and Methods for Objective 3.3: Is there a significant difference between the

commercial mosquito repelling products and the oregano mosquito repellant floor polish

in terms of Effectiveness.

Once the 1kg melted wax mixed with 60ml oregano extract dries up, it will be ready to use as an mosquito

repellant oregano scented floor polish that can be used twice or thrice a month for it last 10-14 days to get

RIF of mosquitos.
