What is UBD?

- Understanding By Design or UBD, is a framework and accompanying design process for thinking decisively about unit lesson pl
anning. The concept was developed by Jay McTighe and Grant Wiggins, and as part of their principles they state that UBD ".....is
not a philosophy of education". With UBD, the ultimate goal is to think backward, focusing on the big picture; at the end of a unit
what is essential question your students should be able to answer?

What are the Stages of UBD?

STAGE 1: SET TARGET
- has to do with result/desired outcomes. Results and desired outcomes are what students should be able to know and do at the end
of the course unit. They are expressed in terms of overall goals and specifically defined in terms of content and performance stan
dards.

STAGE 2: DETERMINE EVIDENCE OF UNDERSTANDING

- is on assessment. Assessment refers to the acceptable evidence that the desired goal haass been attained. This evidence maybe in
the form of products and performances. These products and performances are the demonstration of conceptual understanding, cont
ent skills and attitudes students learned.

STAGE 3: PLAN INSTRUCTION

- spells out the details of the instructional activities that students will go through to attain the standards.
