Standards for Students

• Empowered Learner-Students use technology to articulate and set goals, reflect on their learning, seek
feedback and to demonstrate learning.
• Digital Citizen-Students use technology to create a positive reputation being aware that what they do
online is permanent. Students practice safe, legal, and ethical behaviors online.
• Knowledge Constructor-Students use digital tools to show their learning.
• Innovative Designer-Students use technologies to design tools as a solution to a variety of problems.
• Computational Thinker-Students collect data to understand and develop problem-solving skills.
• Creative Communicator-Students use technology tools, styles and formats to create original
work/objects to communicate and express themselves.
• Global Collaborator-Students use digital tools to gain deeper knowledge and understanding of global
issues, backgrounds, and cultures. Students also work with others across the world to investigate
solutions.

Standards for Educators

• Learner-Educators continue to learn and improve their practice by setting goals, participating in
learning networks, and staying current with research.
• Leader-Educators share their vision for learning with technology by advocating and engaging
colleagues and stakeholders. Educators will also model learning with technology for their colleagues.
• Citizen-Educators create positive learning culture and experiences in their classrooms. They also mentor
students to understand safe and ethical practices with digital tools.
• Collaborator-Educators plan and collaborate with colleagues on ways to create authentic learning
experience, troubleshoot technology, and demonstrate cultural competency.
• Designer-Educators design personalized, independent, and authentic learning activities. Educators
should apply instructional design principles when designing these activities.
• Facilitator-Educators create a culture and model creativity in a way to support student achievement of
ISTE standards for students.
• Analyst-Educators use data from assessments to understand how to accommodate student needs and
inform instruction.

Advocacy Toolkit
• U.S. congress Website Scavenger Hunt-This resource is a digital scavenger hunt. The purpose is to help
students get to know their policy makers and to improve understanding of how Congress works.
• State Legislator Scavenger Hunt-This resource is also an online scavenger hunt. The purpose of this is
similar to the U.S. Congress hunt, except this time students get to know how the state Legislature works.
• Digital Learning Success Story Template-This template is to be used as a guide for writing a digital
learning success story to share with policymakers, in school and community newsletters, and with other
organizations.
• Elevator Pitch Template-This template is used to help if you ever find yourself in a situation where you
only have about a minute to advocate for the importance of digital learning. If you were to every find
yourself in an elevator (or any other situation that only allows for a moment to give your pitch), this
template provides general tips and strategies as well as an outline for an effective pitch.

Summary
Through my exploration of the ISTE Website, I learned more about what the standards are and why they
exist. I’ve heard of ISTE in classes I took in my Undergraduate program and I now realize that I didn’t have a
complete understanding of what the standards are. I used to believe that they were just guidelines for
educators when using technology. By exploring this website, I learned that they are a framework that help
educators, coaches, administration, and students when learning in a digital classroom. The ISTE website is full of
resources that help each position understand what their role is in the journey of educational technology
integration. As an educator and a student, I realize that I can have a big impact on the innovation and
integration of technologies in the classroom. I can also see how my role will change when I change careers to
become an instructional coach.
